English Language Learning Full-Stack Engineer/Solution Architect - ELL Innovation Lab (R&D) in United Kingdom

About Us

At Pearson, we’re committed to a world that’s always learning and to our talented team who makes it all possible. We are bold thinkers and standout innovators who motivate each other to explore new frontiers in an environment that supports and inspires us to always be better. With a rich heritage that combines 150 years of experience in publishing with the latest learning technology and digital services, we help people learn whatever, wherever and however they choose.

Role Overview

ELL Accelerator is a product innovation team responsible for creating the next generation of language learning and language assessment technologies, using emerging technologies such as generative AI, ML, AR, and VR. The team works in quick-paced sprints, building and testing multiple prototypes for new language learning and assessment use cases, focusing on a mix of Horizon 3 experimental experiments and Horizon 1 MVP development.

We’re looking for a passionate and creative full-stack developer/solution architect with extensive experience architecting and developing full-stack applications. This role will be responsible for architecting and implementing full-stack POCs, connecting data flows between 3 rd party services, APIs and prototyping front-end using different front-end frameworks and libraries.

An ideal candidate will be a self-driven technical innovator who can think as both an architect and a creative technologist. This role will work closely with a technical PM and a UX/UI designer with the goal of shaping numerous technical POCs for new product concepts. This role is NOT a good fit for someone looking to write code “by the book” or who expects well-defined tickets with user stories. Instead, this role is better suited for someone who is passionate about demonstrating the potential of the latest technologies with quick technical POCs.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Research the current state of the art of emerging technologies and set vision for how they could be used to solve identified edtech problems (e.g. personalized learning, content generation, intelligent tutors).

  • Develop and deploy working prototypes, using a combination of low/no code tools, integrations, APIs, and bespoke code, optimizing for speed and learning.

  • Support the UX Designer and Product Manager with technical instrumentation, integrations, and bespoke customizations.

  • Be the technical point of contact for the team when working with external tech partners and technical teams within Pearson.

  • Support the Accelerator team with product demos, retrospectives, and share-outs, helping evangelize the use of new technologies and to diffuse expertise across the organization.

  • Document technical requirements, designs, and specs for validated solutions so they can be handed over to GTM product and technical teams for full development.

Minimum qualifications

  • Extensive hands-on experience designing, developing, and deploying customer facing software, ideally at a SaaS or PaaS company.

  • Working proficiency with both front-end and back-end development. Experience using modern JavaScript and/or Python frameworks and libraries.

  • Hands-on experience developing, consuming, and documenting APIs.

  • Demonstrated experience with architecting and developing full-stack websites, web apps, and mobile apps (native or hybrid)

  • Hands-on experience with UI development, using UI libraries, frameworks and translating UX/UI designs into software

  • Experience designing micro-service architecture and deploying cloud-based solutions

  • Experience with architecting ML-powered applications, including familiarity with different LLMs.

  • Experience with 3 rd party tool integrations, automations (e.g. CRMs, Calendly, Zappier), and SDKs (for payments, scheduling, video, audio, text communication)

  • Experience building applications using cloud services such as AWS (Amazon Web Services), GCP (Google Cloud Platform), or Azure cloud services

  • Experience developing rapid prototypes and POCs to evaluate technical feasibility and test value of functionalities with users.

  • Working understanding of and passion for some or all of the following areas: ML, Conversational AI, NLP/NLU, and/or XR.

  • Passion for product, innovation, and entrepreneurship as demonstrated by a portfolio of side projects, contributions to open-source software, or publications or social media channels dedicated to sharing best practices in software, product, or technology
