Assessment & Qualifications Braille Proofreader - Pearson Braille Services in Houston, Texas

The Braille Proofreader of Pearson Braille Services will adhere to the braille proofreading procedures that align with current requirements from the Braille Authority of North America. Additionally, the Braille Proofreader will support ongoing research into the development of tactile materials used in assessments and will provide subject matter expertise as needed in support of Pearson programs and services.

Office is located at 6550 W Sam Houston Parkway N, Ste 250, Houston, TX 77041.

Major Responsibilities

  1. Proofread braille materials and tactile graphics and make edit recommendations according to program specifications

  2. Stay current on all changes and new rules in accordance with the Braille Authority of North America

  3. Collaborate with braille transcribers and tactile graphic designers to resolve code and formatting questions and maintain accurate documentation of decisions

  4. Collaborate with copyholders to maintain accurate project logs and provide regular status updates to program leads

  5. Manage and complete multiple tasks accurately and on-schedule

  6. Follows all company policies, procedures, and business ethics codes

  • Frequent use of standard office equipment

  • Prolonged sitting

  • Frequent bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

  • Repetitive hand motions (keyboarding and use of mouse)

  • Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 20 pounds)

  • May work prolonged and irregular hours

  • Occasional travel

  • Work with frequent interruptions

  • Maintain emotional control under pressure

Qualifications

Education

Bachelor’s degree (required)

Certification(s)

  • National Library Service Literary Braille Proofreader (or Transcriber) Certification (within one year of date of hire)

  • National Braille Association Braille Formats Certification (within three years of date of hire)

Experience

Minimum of 3 years of experience proofreading braille materials, including instructional and assessment materials for K-12 and college-level content

Special Knowledge and Skills

  1. Knowledge of braille and publications/production systems

  2. Keyboarding skills

  3. Intermediate proficiency in the use of software packages related to office operations including but not limited to MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat Pro

  4. Knowledge of Spanish braille

  5. Strong knowledge of Braille Formats, Nemeth Code, Unified English Braille Guidelines for Technical Materials, and Tactile Graphics Guidelines

  6. Self-starter with the ability to work independently with little to no supervision

  7. Excellent organizational, interpersonal/teamwork, and communication (written and verbal) skills

  8. Keen attention to detail in all aspects of the job

  9. Perform all tasks with a sense of urgency

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expert knowledge of UEB Guidelines for Technical Material

  • Nemeth Certification

  • Verbal and written fluency in Spanish
