Smarthinking, a Pearson service unit, is looking for a motivated and experienced individual to join our team as a part-time, online tutor in Statistics. Smarthinking provides online tutoring to support colleges, universities, high schools, and individuals. Online tutors are the backbone of our service and should be driven to deliver a high-quality, personalized service for students at various academic levels.

At Pearson and within Smarthinking, we work to facilitate a culture of professional reflection and consistent quality among our teams of tutors. Tutors can work from any location with computer and reliable Internet access. As part-time employees, tutors may work up to 19 hours per week, and are generally expected to commit to a regular schedule of at least 8 hours per week.

Statistics Tutors will assist students with problems and assignments in various statistics courses, ranging from developmental to advanced. A broad knowledge of statistical methodologies, subject-specific applications, and statistical technologies is required, and tutors must be able to easily move from one topic to another, as we work daily with students from many institutions.

Qualifications

To qualify, individuals must have:

A minimum of a master’s degree in Statistics or related discipline, PhD preferred.

  • Post-secondary teaching or tutoring experience in Statistics within the past 3-5 years.

  • Demonstrated competence in a variety of statistical courses and topics, including fundamental principles of probability, discrete and continuous distributions, descriptive and graphical methods, inferential statistics (from z-tests through ANOVA and other methods), sampling methods and analysis, process and quality control, regression/ linear modeling methods, and nonparametric applications

  • Experience and familiarity with a variety of common basic statistical technologies (TI calculators, Excel, SPSS, MiniTab, StatCrunch, etc.)

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to troubleshoot problems calmly in potentially stressful situations.

  • Strong typing and communication skills.

Flexibility in availability, including some weekend hours.

Additional Desirable Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

Online teaching or tutoring experience

  • Familiarity with MyStatLab

  • Experience with Moodle or other course management systems

  • Knowledge of biostatistics and/or business statistics

  • Recent experience with probability theory

  • Extensive experience with R
