Smarthinking, a Pearson service unit, is looking for a motivated individual to join our team as part-time, Online Tutor in Computer Science. Smarthinking provides real-time, online tutoring and learning services to high schools and colleges.
Computer Science Tutors will assist students with problems and assignments in various programming languages and computer science courses, mainly at the introductory level. A broad knowledge of programming methodologies, experience in more than one language, and an ability to successfully and creatively troubleshoot code is required.
At Pearson and within Smarthinking, we work to facilitate a culture of professional reflection and consistent quality among our teams of tutors. Tutors can work from any location with computer and reliable Internet access. As part-time employees, tutors may work up to 19 hours per week, and are generally expected to commit to a regular schedule of at least 8 hours per week.
To qualify, individuals must have:
A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related discipline, MS or PhD preferred.
Post-secondary teaching or tutoring within the past 3-5 years.
Demonstrated competence in a variety of computer science courses and topics, including programming for Linux, system architecture, and in a variety of languages and language types (Java, Python, C, C , C#, SQL), databases, debugging, performance measures, and various analysis techniques.
Experience and familiarity with a variety of common programming packages, compilers, etc.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to troubleshoot problems calmly in potentially stressful situations.
Strong typing and communication skills.
Additional Desirable Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:
Basic experience with Windows and MS Office applications.
Basic experience with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator & InDesign.
This is a remote position that will require tutors to work at any location with reliable access to a computer and Internet. Candidates must reside in the United States and, if hired, be able to provide documentation regarding eligibility to work in the United States.
