About the team

Pearson School Qualifications delivers qualifications and digital-first teaching and learning products and services to schools both UK-based and internationally. This includes delivering tutoring as part of the National Tutoring Programme, where we deploy 1500 tutors to service children in 900 schools across England with high-quality online tutoring aimed at mitigating pandemic-related learning loss.

Position summary

The Tutoring Business Development Lead, Pearson School Qualifications, will be responsible for leading and growing a tutoring business, globally. This leader will be accountable for growing our current B2B tutoring business in UK schools, expanding this schools business internationally, and launching a B2C tutoring business. They will hold responsibility for both the commercial and operational success of this portfolio, including a laser focus on learning outcomes and student and tutor safeguarding.

To succeed in this role, you will be a creative and ambitious business builder who can balance strategic vision with operational rigour. You will be comfortable proactively engaging across functional and departmental boundaries. You will thrive in a setting with a high level of independence and accountability and unwavering customer-centric mindset.

Reporting directly into the senior leadership team of Pearson School Qualifications, this position will have a high level of visibility and strategic importance, with substantial opportunity to grow within the organisation. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Overall financial success of the tutoring business in terms of revenue and profit

  • Defining and implementing a tutoring business growth strategy

  • Developing the tutoring product strategy and pipeline (including technology strategy) working in collaboration with the Pearson School Qualifications’ Product Division

  • Continually optimizing the operational delivery of tutoring (primarily online) working in collaboration with operational divisions across Pearson School Qualifications

  • Ensuring safeguarding measures are rigorous and monitored effectively

  • Sourcing and winning procurement opportunities related to tutoring.

  • Ensuring a delightful end-to-end customer experience

  • Acting as an internal and external ambassador for Pearson, generating excitement and enthusiasm for the role tutoring has to play in education

  • Promoting a culture of partnership, teamwork and innovation and develop motivated, inspired, and enthusiastic cross-functional teams.

  • Develop team members (direct reports and/or peers and colleagues) to create a strong commercially-driven talent pipeline.

Qualifications/Experience - Key Requirements

  • Proven track record of growing a business with commercial success

  • Experience as a General Manager across multiple functions – operational, sales and marketing and product development

  • Ideally, experience in working in a tutoring business or similar

  • Entrepreneurial, ‘hands on’ style who can delegate tasks and trust others to deliver

  • Great insight into the needs of different markets and the opportunities within them, and the capability to build business strategies that serve multiple markets at once

  • Deep comprehension of the digital world and ability to translate this into product strategies, team mindset and ways of working

  • Comfortable with changing priorities that adjust to market trends and needs

Role location: This is currently a remote working position until Summer 2021. Thereafter, the individual assigned can work flexibly as a remote worker between their home and can attend an office location if dependant on business requirement.
