We are recruiting for Success Coaches for a new online school, Pearson Online Academy UK Global.

The role of the Success Coach is to support and motivate students online to achieve to their very highest educational potential and to develop the skills and mindset required for success at school and beyond. Some of our Success Coaches specialise in university and career guidance, and others are SEND specialists.

Pearson Online Academy UK Global uses a flipped classroom style teaching methodology to increase student engagement and encourage critical thinking. Students work through interactive self-study materials to develop an understanding of subject content; this self-study is then followed by live teacher-led lessons in a virtual classroom. This approach enables students to work through materials independently at a time and pace that suits them, and the technology generates deep insights about their learning. Students are also supported by teachers in one-to-one online office hour consultations.

Students also engage in a selection of electives and extra-curricular activities, that can enable them to extend their learning through engaging projects, connect with other students from around the world, gain social confidence and to develop a range of skills.

The role of a Success Coach at Pearson Online Academy UK Global

Our Success Coach team has a critical support role within the school community, motivating students in their studies, mentoring them in their preparation for university and life beyond, and also providing support to SEND students.

Successful candidates will ideally have previous experience of working in pastoral and learning environments. Some will have experience of supporting students in their university applications, while others will have experience creating effective teaching and learning strategies for SEND students. In addition, some experience of working with secondary age students from a range of cultural backgrounds would be an advantage.

We are looking for empathetic and student-centred professionals who are able to advise, motivate and support students through regular, individual coaching sessions and weekly online lessons.

They will show the ability and drive to develop the highest standards of support for students and a willingness to be involved in setting up and shaping all aspects of the school.

Success Coaches work with students and their parents or mentors to support students as they progress through their education. They provide students with guidance in becoming effective independent learners, they assist them as they make university application and career plans, and some develop Independent Learning Plans for our SEND students. They are the first point of contact for parents or mentors to liaise with Pearson Online Academy UK Global and address any pupil concerns in pastoral or non-academic issues.

Successful candidates will receive training on how to best utilise the online platform, its features and content as well as best practice online teaching methodologies.

All Success Coaches will report to the Pearson Online Academy UK Global Principal.

We are primarily seeking Success Coaches for full-time roles although part-time roles may additionally be available.

Success Coach – SEND – Job Description

The Role

We are recruiting for Success Coaches who will support pupils online to achieve their very highest potential in their secondary education and develop the skills and mindset required for success at school and beyond.

We are looking for experienced educators with a passion for their student pastoral care, expertise in the assessment, provision and support of SEND students in a school, and a willingness to be involved in setting up and shaping all aspects of the school.

The role reports to the Principal of Pearson Online Academy UK Global.

Key responsibilities

Coaching and Mentoring

The successful applicant will:

  • Establish a positive relationship with each student assigned to you through regular one to one meetings.

  • Provide personalised coaching and mentoring support to students, motivating them to make effective progress in their learning and promoting their confidence and independence.

  • Help foster a community among culturally diverse students by providing opportunities for interaction and collaboration.

  • Be the first point of contact for parents or mentors, assisting them in supporting their children.

  • Deliver live lessons on a Skills and Mindset programme which covers the skills, strategies and mindset required for students to be successful at the school and in their life beyond it. And assist in reviewing, evaluating, and developing the programme.

  • Liaise with your fellow Success Coaches to support each other and share best practice.

  • Help foster an effective, enthusiastic, and safe online learning environment.

  • Establish standards for student behaviour that promotes digital citizenship, ensures academic integrity and the appropriate use of technology.

  • Be able to address basic technology related issues that may impact students’ online learning.

Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities

The successful applicant will:

  • Oversee the provision of learning support to SEND students in the online school.

  • Create effective teaching and learning strategies for SEND students and support teaching staff in their effective implementation.

  • Confidently write, via consultation with SEND students and (where appropriate/necessary) parents or mentors, bespoke Individual Learning Plans for all SEND students, which feature a practicable range of reasonable adjustment recommendations for teachers to consider.

  • Develop rigorous evaluation plans to assess the impact of interventions on learning outcomes for each student and conduct regular reviews of each plan.

  • Conduct assessments for new students so that the school can fully support any learning adjustment needs.

  • Assist with the processing of examination access arrangement requests with regards to any in-class tests/mocks and external examinations that SEND students take, in careful accordance with the JCQ’s regulations.

  • Liaise with parents or mentors and relevant professionals.

  • Be a key point of contact for external agencies.

Pastoral and Extra-curricular

The successful applicant will:

  • Help to shape and extend the pastoral and learning support offered to students at the school.

  • Work closely with all staff at the school and be the focal point for student welfare across the school, taking responsibility for reporting any concerns to the Principal, and ensuring that action plans are implemented.

  • Liaise closely with parents or mentors to develop a holistic view of a student’s welfare and support their needs.

  • Help to shape the school’s extra-curricular programme and supervise a range of activities and encourage student participation in them

  • Proactively work with students to support their individual extra-curricular passions.

  • Ensure school policies and procedures with regard to student behaviour, daily routines, attendance expectations, homework etc are adhered to.

  • Assist with the development of effective links with external agencies such as charities, that the school may choose to support.

Personal and Professional Development

The successful applicant will:

  • Attend and take advantage of the Professional Development opportunities provided by the school.

  • Keep abreast of developments and best practise in SEND, and continuously update their knowledge and skills for using the evolving assistive technology tools to specifically support SEND students learning online.

  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure that the school delivers the very best educational experiences to its students.

  • Be proactively involved in other key areas of the school’s development, particularly at this early stage of the initiative.

Requirements and Personal Attributes

The successful applicant will:

  • Have previous experience of working with secondary age students in a pastoral and learning context.

  • Have experience of supporting students with a wide range of special educational needs and disabilities such as: sensory and physical needs; social, mental and emotional needs; communication and interaction needs; cognition and learning needs (e.g. general and/or specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia).

  • Have a proven track-record of successfully supporting SEND students, including conducting initial assessments and advising colleagues with effective learning support strategies.

  • Have experience of implementing effective support strategies for young people.

  • Have experience of supporting SEND students in 1:1 and group settings.

  • Have experience evaluating the effectiveness of interventions across a school in terms of outcomes for students.

  • Ideally, have experience processing exam access arrangement requests in compliance with the JCQ’s regulations.

  • Ideally, have strong knowledge of the UK government’s SEND Code of Practice and The Equality Act 2010.

  • Ideally, possess a Level 7 qualification in Individual Specialist Assessment, or an SpLD Assessment Practising Certificate, or be an appropriately qualified psychologist qualified to conduct assessments and registered with the HCPC.

  • Have a Level 6 qualification in any discipline.

  • Working knowledge of a range of support strategies to suit different learning styles for young people with SEND to achieve positive learning outcomes.

  • Have high expectations of all students.

  • The ability to enthuse and inspire students, maximising achievement, and progress at all levels.

  • Flexibility, resilience, and a caring approach towards students.

  • Commitment, integrity, strong inter-personal and communication skills.

  • Excellent organisation and administration skills.

  • The desire to continuously develop themselves.

  • Willingness to learn about, and become advocates of, online learning technologies.

  • Have working knowledge of assistive technology systems that are suitable for assisting with the support of online learners.

  • Be passionate about levelling the playing field for SEND students.

Previous experience of SEND provision for students online is welcomed but is not a pre-requisite for the role.

Previous experience working in an online school environment is welcomed but is not a pre-requisite for the role, however you do need to be IT literate and able to adapt to the online teaching environment.

You will be working full-time from home.

Our school term dates follow the British academic year, with classes beginning in September.

We are looking for Success Coaches to join our team for the launch of our school in September 2021, however if you are interested in joining us before this, there may be opportunities to work with us as we set up the school. All support staff will also be required to be available for ten days in August for induction training.

Some of our key target markets are in South East Asia, India, the Middle East and the UK, and to accommodate these time zones our first live interactions with students will be timetabled early in the mornings UK time. On some days they might start at 0600, with an early finish on such days. There is flexibility to schedule some of your workload at hours that best suit you.
