Pearson Senior Area Director in Sacramento, California

The Senior Area Director (SAD) position is a leadership role in our Client Services Division. The SAD has broad knowledge of education policy, testing and measurement, and large-scale assessment. The Senior Area Director serves as a key client contact responsible for client engagement and ongoing client relationship management.

This role ensures that activities associated with assigned assessment programs are carried out in accordance with contract specifications, schedules, and budgets while maintaining client satisfaction. This role reports to the Director, Educator Solutions for Licensing and Learning.

This role will serve in a hybrid remote / office format working remotely with in-office activities required, as needed, in Pearson’s Sacramento, CA office.



  • Directs all components of assigned large-scale assessment programs, including development, administration, and scoring.

  • Provides leadership and direction to resolve issues and challenges in program development and administration.

  • Participates in organizational strategic planning and financial planning activities.

  • Communicates with leadership to share program updates, act in a consultative role, and provide input and guidance in setting policy and delivering on our contractual commitments.

  • Is responsible for the professional development of assigned staff, including the preparation of Educational Program Managers for the role of Senior Area Director.

Client Relationship Management:

  • Develops, cultivates, and maintains long-term, collaborative relationships with client staff (typically state education agency representatives), key stakeholders, and strategic partners.

  • Ensures that program activities are carried out in accordance with contract specifications, schedules, and budgets with quality and service that meet and exceed customer expectations.

  • Serves as an advisor and thought partner to clients and key stakeholders on the design and implementation of educational assessment solutions.

  • Manages client expectations and maintains ongoing communications to keep client informed of, and get client feedback on, all aspects of program development and administration.

Program Management:

  • Provides leadership for Client Services Division staff.

  • Meets with Client Services Division and other divisions’ staff on a regular basis to review program status and planning.

  • Represents both the client perspective and the corporate perspective in decision-making.

  • Participates in the development of proposals, contract amendments, subcontracts, and statements of work, and ensures that they are accurate and completed in a timely manner.

  • Brings knowledge of testing and measurement to the process of designing and implementing tests to meet professional standards and the needs of the client.

  • Directs psychometric and measurement resources for the design and implementation of assessment solutions.

  • Provides quality control for all program products, processes, and activities.


Education, Skills, and Experience:

  • Doctorate degree required. Concentration in Assessment and Measurement, preferred.

  • 5-7 years management experience in large-scale educational testing, preferably in certification and licensing.

  • Knowledge of developing trends in education, including pedagogical best practices, early child and adolescent development, and instructional and assessment best practices.

  • Professional experience managing and supporting large contracts.

  • Experience in client relationship management, project management, and proposal management.

  • Excellent written skills, including technical writing, and oral communication skills, including public presentation.

  • Excellent organizational skills and analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  • 5-7 years supervisory experience directing the planning, organizing, scheduling, monitoring, and evaluating of deliverables.

  • Experience organizing and prioritizing work.

  • Demonstration of a strong analytic capability and ability to successfully manage complex business issues.

  • Knowledge of current education policies and issues.

  • Experience with performance-based assessment preferred.

  • Experience with multiple languages a plus.

  • Travel required.
