Pearson Advanced Content and Learning Specialist (Senior/Commissioning Editor) in Rotherham, United Kingdom

About the team

The Primary English and Extended Curriculum team is a dedicated, supportive and knowledgeable group of people who work creatively to produce a range of high-quality, effective and diverse print and digital resources for Primary school children and their teachers. The resources created by the team cover all learner needs, from mainstream programmes to intervention.

About the role

We are looking for a highly experienced, proactive editor with a passion for Primary education, substantial editorial experience and strong project management skills to take on this permanent Advanced level role, which combines editorial work, editorial leadership and commissioning work. This role will focus initially on our Primary reading list, which consists of a range of digital and print resources to help all children learn to read. The successful candidate will take an editorial lead on one of our upcoming projects, which will involve a wide variety of tasks including working closely with authors, defining processes to ensure the project runs smoothly, supporting less experienced team members and freelancers and making informed, pragmatic decisions about content to ensure it meets the needs of our learners whilst remaining on schedule and within budget. You will also be open to commissioning new products and supporting the Product Manager with research tasks and putting together project proposals.

Key responsibilities:

Editorial Management

  • Work closely with authors on draft manuscripts to ensure these are high quality and meet brand and style guidelines as well as being right for our learners.

  • Brief, train and oversee freelance editorial work and work with our suppliers to ensure work is briefed accurately and managed effectively.

  • Ensure resources are diverse and inclusive so that every child has the best possible learning experience.

  • Work together with a wide range of people from across our business and with external suppliers to ensure that all content – whether print or digital – is on schedule, within budget and created to the highest standard to support teachers and learners.

  • Some hands-on development editing, re-writing and proofreading of resources; write briefs for artwork, photos and videos; and build digital content using content creation tools.

  • Carry out updates to existing products to ensure they continue to meet customer needs.

Editorial leadership

  • Work with colleagues and suppliers to create, challenge and improve team workflows and author writing processes and templates.

  • Provide support, guidance and training to other team members, especially those with less experience.

  • Become the expert in your subject area and be able to respond to queries from customers, sales teams and colleagues.

  • Take a lead in making editorial decisions and create and update style guides, content guidance and other editorial decisions that the whole team can follow.

  • Represent the needs of your project and/or team in cross-team projects with the wider business.

Commissioning

  • Support the Product Manager in the creation of new publishing proposals, e.g. by conducting market research.

  • Commission authors for new publishing, including approaching suitable authors, agreeing fees, contracting them and briefing them.

  • Attend and lead parts of author workshops to generate new and exciting content which meets needs of learners and teachers.

  • Develop and improve author writing templates for print and digital resources.

  • Work with technology and UX (user experience) teams to define and brief new functionality on our platforms or tools to ensure any new developments meet the needs of teachers and learners and to improve existing functionality.

Market Knowledge

  • Develop your understanding of how to create the most user-friendly resources for teachers and for children of different ages, backgrounds and reading levels.

  • Continually update your knowledge of the Primary school landscape to ensure you are developing the best products and services for our customers

  • Create and maintain relationships with schools and share findings from research widely within the team.

  • You may also be asked to respond to customer queries about your products.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for someone who....

  • Is passionate about helping Primary school children to develop a love of reading.

  • Would enjoy working within a team of people across a wide variety of roles with the common aim of developing market-winning digital and print resources.

  • Is already taking or is ready to take an editorial lead on large, multi-component projects to ensure they run smoothly.

  • Has a creative flair and ability to understand what interests young learners.

  • Has excellent communication, organisational and project management skills.

Prior experience in the Primary sector would be ideal, although we would consider someone who has worked in another sector and who has a genuine and demonstrable interest in Primary education.

Role Location: This is a hybrid role and will allow for home working as well as from one of our offices based in either Oxford, London or Hellaby. Occasional travel between the sites may be required.
