This is a two year contract and can be based at any of our Pearson offices in the US or London.

Role Overview

Pearson PLC is seeking to appoint a business executive to serve as SVP Diversity & Inclusion reporting to the Chief Human Resources Officer. This newly created position heads the diversity and inclusion (D&I) function and works with stakeholders across the company to create and implement a world class diversity and inclusion strategy. The global D&I strategy will promote an all-encompassing inclusive culture, foster inclusive leadership, promote collaboration and innovation, eliminate hidden barriers to success, enable development of diversity-friendly products & services and empower the company to attract, retain and advance top talent from underrepresented backgrounds. The end goal is a culture that is highly diverse & inclusive and products & services that reflect the needs of our diverse customers.

Role Responsibilities:

  • A proven track record of successfully building new enterprise wide function/s and capabilities within a complex global organisation.

  • Develop and execute a robust D&I strategy focused on people (i.e., candidates, employees, etc.) & partnerships with the most senior leaders in the organization (Pearson Executive Management, Board, etc.). Partnerships to include:

  • Corporate Affairs & Marketing – full brand integration with D&I

  • Global Product – ensure products and content reflect diverse operational areas

  • Supplier management – women and/or minority owned businesses

  • Advancing comprehensive global presence and world-wide ERG collaboration with a definitive link to business goals

  • Top leader with vision, capable of defining not just a strategy for current state but for how Pearson will need to address issues of diversity in the future. An enterprise business leader accountable for the D&I global strategy and operating plan while driving overall business goals.

  • Demonstrate executive leadership qualities, including excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills, inclusive leadership style, strategic and innovative thinking, persuasion and influencing, professional presence and the ability to build enthusiasm and commitment.

  • Build a 21stcentury workforce and culture of inclusion, impactful employee engagement and an intentional social and business impact placing Pearson at the forefront of the Edtech industry.

  • Enable development of diversity friendly products and services that reflect the needs of our diverse customers.

  • Develop a capable D&I team based on strong organization skills, including setting priorities, planning, structuring project deliverables and problem solving. Past experience in executing disruptive, global business models for employee engagement and inclusive leadership behaviors.

  • Develop KPIs and metrics that demonstrate impact of D&I strategy. Demonstrated experience with measurable results of undertaking equality impact assessments/equality analysis.

  • Cultivate external marketplace relationships with diverse communities and organizations. As a Pearson business leader - understand the impact of diversity influences between business to client, client to business and external suppliers.

  • Ensure regulatory and statutory compliance.Knowledge of relevant employment legislation around the world.


  • Well known and respected subject matter expert in the areas of D&I.

  • Proven experience in development and implementation of employee inclusion initiatives.

  • Expert knowledge of diversity and inclusion laws, rules and regulations.

  • General knowledge of HR policies and procedures.

  • Strong change management capability / influencing skills.

  • Strategy and design: As part of the Centre of Expertise leadership team, provide strategic thought leadership in the design of a global Talent strategy which ensures that Pearson is best placed to attract, retain and develop the talent required to meet business objectives for both today and in the future.

  • Communication: Ensures HR Community is well versed with D&I initiatives and overall strategy.

  • Influence: Drives the appropriate levers to achieve a richly diverse employee population, as well as a culture of inclusion.

Deliverables & Compliance

  • Ensure regulatory and statutory compliance; e.g. tracking of all regulatory changes relating to diversity laws and regulations etc.

  • Provide consultative advisory services to senior leadership, PEM, etc. and is the final escalation point for expert advice on all issues related to D&I.

Performance and continuous improvement:

  • Analyzes D&I reports - highlights areas of concern/action as needed.

  • Monitor solutions, policies, vendors and employee feedback to drive continuous improvement and ensure Pearson is a recognised diversity leader in the industry and the community.

  • Measure impact and develop KPIs for D&I strategy

  • As a subject matter expert in the areas of D&I – is well versed with changing regulations, best practices and leverages his/her network for benchmarking purposes.

People management:

  • Provide line management responsibility to D&I team including setting performance targets, monitoring performance and providing development opportunities.

Ways of working / behaviors:

  • Manage relationships with external & internal diversity stakeholders including Non-Government Organisations, local community groups, professional HR organizations, media etc. to enhance and market Pearson’s diversity and inclusion branding. Maintains close liaison with Corporate Affairs for full D&I integration.

  • Act as an ambassador for One Pearson, actively seeking to implement globally consistent frameworks and toolkits.

  • Foster strong collaboration and build trustful relationships with all HR teams and enabling functions to deliver comprehensive and joined up solutions.



Education & Experience

Experience as the Global Head of Diversity & Inclusion (top role) for EMEA, North America, South America, etc.

Bachelor’s in Business or related discipline/equivalent experience; MBA is strongly preferred.

Strong management skills – proven ability to lead a D&I team through an overall company digital transformation.
