Job Purpose

The Database Analyst supports the Manager of Reporting in the US, maintaining the database in the Global Products & Sales (GPS) application. GPS is a system that aggregates and provides reporting on sales of Pearson products globally. It receives product and sales feeds from multiple systems across the world and provides the information needed to account to authors for rights and royalty purposes and to Pearson affiliates for intercompany trading terms accounting.

Owing to a heavy workload compounded by tight deadlines, the Database Analyst must be able to self-manage time, responsibilities, and multiple priorities. This individual will have access to and the ability to manipulate data that is critical to the business; therefore, he or she needs to have experience in handling large volumes of data with a strong emphasis on data integrity. The analyst must also be able to effectively and professionally interface with all levels of staff and management around the globe.

This role will have responsibility for:

  • Coordinating and processing of all required data feeds

  • Monitoring and management of data quality including troubleshooting Global Product & Sales and International Sales (IDM) data mart applications

  • Timely resolution of suspense items

  • Analysis of system capabilities and functionality with intent to improve processes and productivity

  • Recommendations that drive system development and improvement in data quality

  • Overseeing the coordination and receipt of all required data feeds

  • Maintaining and communicating user documentation and guidelines via GPS Group on Neo

  • Documenting database standards, procedures and data definitions

  • Documenting and Conducting end user training and support around reporting tools, e.g. Business Objects. Training will involve a variety of users, in a variety of countries, and with a variety of needs, e.g. technical, rights & royalty accounting, sales, marketing, or financial. All must be trained to efficiently and effectively use the databases and reporting systems to meet specific needs

  • Managing user access permissions and privileges

  • Managing and maintaining all database tables, e.g. subsidiary status; reporting calendars; foreign exchange rates

  • Coordinating the establishment of new subsidiaries in the databases

  • Monitoring database performance and recommend improvements

  • Analyzing and recommending enhancements to database functionality to automate business processes and meet functional requirements, including the development and implementation of structural changes, user interfaces and reporting tools

  • Assisting Manager in ensuring database capabilities are aligned with the organization’s sales, royalty accounting, marketing and customer care requirements

  • Coordinating, performing, and documenting all QA and UAT testing related to system enhancements/modifications

  • Developing a thorough understanding of the organization’s data sources, uses and reporting requirements

  • Designing and developing standardized, ad hoc, and custom reports for end users

  • Special Projects as needed/assigned

Related work and academic experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or appropriate combination of education and experience

  • Requires at least 2-3 years of experience in Database Administration, Analysis, or Design

  • Requires a proven ability to train others

  • Financial or accounting background required

Essential skills and competencies

  • Must have a thorough working knowledge of Business Intelligence tools, e.g. Business Objects

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite products, in particular MS Excel

  • Working knowledge of Structured Query Language (SQL)

  • Strong and broad technical background in IT related activities including business applications and infrastructure

  • Strong presentation skills; ability to present ideas clearly, effectively and persuasively to all levels of the organization

  • Intranet skills preferable

  • Requires advanced reporting skills

  • Good analytical, organizational, follow-up and planning skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills with the ability to communicate technical issues to the general business community

  • Multilingual skills a plus
