* Position Purpose: *

The Sustainability & Social Impact (SSI) team is part of Pearson’s Global Corporate Affairs & Marketing (GCAM) group. GCAM focuses on building relationships and strengthening Pearson’s reputation with key stakeholders, including customers and learners, policymakers, investors, influencers, and our employees. The SSI team works collaboratively with teams across Pearson to ensure business strategies, practices, and processes contribute to addressing the social, environmental and economic needs of society in a way that also creates business value.

We are looking for an experienced sustainability / corporate responsibility professional to take on the role of Sustainability Manager, with a focus on developing and implementing Pearson’s environmental sustainability programs. You will also play an important role in shaping and implementing other social impact and employee engagement initiatives. You will also help guidePearson’s overall sustainability strategy as well as support our 2020 Sustainability Plan through research and data analytics. Reporting to the Sustainability Director, you will help evolve and implement Pearson’s sustainability agenda, supporting efforts to integrate responsible business practices across Pearson and drive innovative programs.

Key Responsibilities:

Program and project management

Environment (approx 40-50%)

●Develop and manage environmental initiatives to reduce Pearson’s carbon footprint and resource consumption, including energy efficiency, renewable energy and sustainable sourcing projects, contributing to overall program strategy.

●Support efforts to track and report impacts and cost savings across environmental commitments, liaising with GCAM to communicate environmental activities.

●Represent Pearson’s environmental agenda externally, and manage key relationships with key environmental partners.

Social impact projects (approx 20-25%)

●In collaboration with the Sustainability Director and/or Programs and Partnerships Director, support other social impact projects, partnerships and employee engagement.

* Strategy development and implementation * (approx 10%)

●Contribute to the development and implementation of Pearson’s overall sustainability plan and related initiatives, including materiality and other strategic reviews, as assigned.

●Work closely with business leads to ensure that corporate sustainability initiatives are implemented, and ESG issues are considered in internal processes (eg supplier due diligence, risk management, etc.)

●Support creation of communication and training materials to enable implementation of sustainability commitments.

* Research and analysis * (approx 15-20%)

●Drive the collection and analysis of key sustainability and ESG data, to support organizational goal setting, implementation planning, and programs.

●Conduct and communicate industry research and benchmarking on emerging sustainability trends and best practices, particularly as they relate to key business priorities and functions (operations, supply chain, HR, product, technology, etc.).

●Perform value analysis of key initiatives, positioning Pearson’s sustainability program as a source of growth and profitability.

Qualifications

* Key Attributes: *

●Degree (or equivalent) in environmental science or studies, sustainable business or a related discipline preferred.

●Broad understanding of sustainability issues, with depth of knowledge/experience in relevant environmental topics (eg climate change, deforestation, energy efficiency, renewable energy).

●Strong knowledge of current tools and trends in sustainability, including familiarity with environmental standards and reporting requirements (eg ISO 14001, CDP, LEED)

●Experience of:

○improving the environmental footprint of a multinational business or other large, international organization

○engaging, influencing and collaborating with business partners in operations, supply chain, technology and other functions

○managing social impact programs and partnerships

○managing complex, long-term projects

○working in a large, global organization

* Developing & Leveraging Relationships – * Collaborative approach, with a strong interest in working across cultures and teams; ability to lead through influencing; a track record of building trust and sustaining excellent internal and external relationships; and comfort interfacing with all levels of management.

* Data Management – * Experience developing social impact and commercial measurement frameworks and reporting approaches.
