Job Title: Pensions Assistant Finance Manager
Reports to: Pensions Finance Manager
Main purpose/objectives of role:
The Pearson Pension Plan is a hybrid defined benefit and defined contribution occupation pension plan.
The role is to assist with maintaining and reviewing all financial operations of the Pearson Pension Plan and to prepare financial reports for the Company, Trustee and Committees of the Plan.
Main areas of activity and responsibility:
Supervise and review the maintenance of the Plan accounting records.
Assist in preparing the financial statements for the Plan for the year end
- To prepare (with the assistance of other members of the Pensions Finance
Team) the reporting data for Pearson plc’s financial statement disclosures
on a half yearly basis.
To review the month end investment accounting work.
To review the quarterly Investment Manager reporting pack compiled by
the Pension Accounts Assistant prior to publication for Investment
- Liaise with the investment advisers and scheme actuaries, including
providing asset information monthly and dealing with queries.
Audit & Risk
- To assist in managing the external audit process for both the Plan itself,
and for the pensions elements of the Pearson plc audit, dealing with
queries, coordinating audit visits.
Assist in preparation of Audit & Risk Committee papers.
To assist the Pensions Finance Director on assurance work as required.
To prepare (with the assistance of other members of the Pensions Finance Team) and review the monthly management accounts for the Plan expenditure.
To prepare (with the assistance of other members of the Pensions Finance Team) the Plan expenditure annual budget and half yearly forecasts.
To prepare (with the assistance of other members of the Pensions Finance Team) the Plan Cashflow budget and half yearly forecasts.
To monitor and review all investment calls and distributions for the Plan’s Private Equity and Infrastructure managers.
To review monthly bank reconciliations prepared by the Pensions Accounts Assistant. Other
To review the quarterly and annual Office of National Statistics (ONS) returns prepared by members of the Pensions Finance Team.
To review monthly intercompany reconciliations and the reimbursed pensions analysis.
To support the development of the Pensions Accounts Assistants.
To proactively evaluate and monitor the Plan’s financial operations and internal controls to maximise their accuracy and efficiency.
To maintain (with the assistance of other members of the Pensions Finance Team) documentation of Pension accounting procedures.
To attend conferences, courses and review appropriate technical material to ensure awareness of relevant technical issues.
Deputising for the Pensions Financial Manager, as necessary.
Ad hoc project work as necessary
Qualifications and experience required:
Newly qualified to qualified accountant with 1-2 years post qualified experience.
Good attention to detail and highly motivated in their work.
A good team player.
Good report writing skills, sufficient to describe financial management information in a clear and concise manner.
Good excel skills
Previous experience in the pensions or investment industry is desirable but not essential.
