Pearson Online A Level Psychology Teacher in London, United Kingdom

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are recruiting for an outstanding A level teacher whose subject specialism is Psychology to teach a new course across two online schools: Harrow School Online and Pearson Online Academy UK Global.

THE ROLE OF AN ONLINE TEACHER

You will be preparing pupils both in the UK and across the world for the Pearson Edexcel AS and A level qualifications. Pupils from Harrow School Online and from Pearson Online Academy UK Global are taught separately but with a similar pedagogical approach.

Teachers monitor their pupils’ progress through self-study elements of the schools online courses and provide targeted tuition to pupils through live lessons to small classes and individual micro-teaching sessions. Both schools work with a flipped classroom, with live lessons focusing on the areas which pupils most need to further practise and extend.

Harrow School Online has smaller class sizes and a more academically ambitious student profile; Pearson Online Academy has larger class sizes and a mixed ability cohort.

YOUR POSITION WITHIN THE SCHOOLS

As a member of staff of Harrow School Online and Pearson Online Academy UK Global you will be joining a network of online teachers employed by Pearson and will be reporting to each school principal.

You will benefit from on-going professional development. You will receive training on how to best utilise the online teaching platform, its features and content as well as best practice online teaching methodologies. Teachers will also be requested to contribute to the elective and extra-curricular student program based on interest and availability.

WHAT WILL A SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE LOOK LIKE?

You will be a dynamic and effective teacher who is able to engage, support and motivate pupils in online lessons and individual support sessions. We are looking for experienced educators with a passion for their subject and a willingness to be involved in setting up and shaping all aspects of the school. KEY RESPONSIBILITES

  • Possess the flexibility to teach Psychology to year 12 and year 13 students with varying academic abilities through a flipped classroom style;

  • ensure the thorough implementation of the Pearson Edexcel A Level Psychology subject specification, preparing pupils for the Pearson Edexcel AS and A level examinations;

  • monitor the progress of pupils in the self-study element of their course and provide targeted instruction in live lessons and timetabled office hours;

  • inaugurate the Psychology course with enthusiasm for all pupils in both schools;

  • contribute to the Super-Curriculum, which includes Elective courses, preparation courses for university examinations, external competitions and other opportunities for academic extension;

  • be a tutor in a Harrow School Online virtual house or a Pearson Online Academy Tutor group, supporting a set of pupils in establishing and achieving their academic goals;

  • make an enthusiastic contribution to extra-curricular clubs and societies;

  • be proactively involved in other key areas of the school’s development, particularly at this early stage of the developed of the online schools;

  • continuously develop and improve your teaching practice, particularly in the online mode of delivery; and

  • regularly communicate with parents to encourage their children to make successful progress in their studies.

  • Strong knowledge of, and enthusiasm for Psychology.

  • Previous experience teaching experience of Psychology at A level.

Previous experience teaching online is welcomed but is not a pre-requisite for the role.

FLEXIBLE WORKING HOURS AND TEACHING LOCATION

School term dates are based on the British academic year, with an August start for teachers and a September start for our pupils, through to the start of July – with slightly longer terms at Pearson Online Academy. You are additionally required to be available for ten days at the end of August for induction training.

Our pupils are distributed over a range of time zones and to accommodate those based in Asia some lessons may be timetabled early in the mornings UK time. Our current timetables begin at 0800 but there is a possibility that earlier lessons may be required from 0700, with an early finish on days when you have an early start. There is flexibility to schedule some of your workload at hours that best suit you.

You are expected to work full-time from home for this position, and will need to have a strong, reliable broadband internet connection, and a suitably quiet location from which you can conduct your lessons undisturbed. Occasionally you may need to attend meetings or training either in the Pearson offices or at Harrow School, but this will be the exception rather than the norm.

The closing date for applications is Tuesday 31st of May. An accompanying letter should outline how you are suited to working in this position, and what you could contribute to Harrow School Online and Pearson Online Academy beyond your subject knowledge.

Candidates who meet our initial shortlisting criteria will be invited to submit video answers to a number of questions to assist in shortlisting for interview. Interviews will be held online in June.

As part of the interview process, candidates will be asked to prepare a sample lesson and teach a portion of this lessons as part of the interview. When we observe your teaching, we will be looking, in particular, for the first four attributes outlined in ‘Requirements’.

The selection process and interview questions will relate to the details given in this job description. You will be asked to explain any discrepancies or anomalies in the information you have provided either on the application form or in your covering letter, as well as any issues arising from references, which we will take up in advance of your interview.
