Context

Over the last 5 years Pearson has invested in a significant transformation of our systems and operating models. We’ve implemented single core platforms (ERP, CRM etc.) across our largest markets (North America & the UK) while also moving to a Global Business Services model across our Enabling Functions (Operations, Finance, HR, IT etc.)

In mid-2019 we setup Global Process Owners to ensure that the standard processes being deployed are owned and governed by process owners who are fully empowered to improve and evolve the process they are responsible for. Our initial focus was to fully support the embedding of all the systems and operational changes we had recently implemented.

We are now looking to embark on the next stage of our transformation focusing on process harmonisation and optimisation to deliver significant improvements in the productivity, efficiency and effectiveness of our processes by leveraging leading-edge process design and technology.

Role Overview & Purpose

The Acquire to Retire GPO (Global Process Owner) will handle defining, designing, developing, and delivering industry comparable ‘High Performance’ capital expenditure processes that are agile, business enabling and reflective of where commonality is viable rather than just driving a top-down standardisation agenda. The Acquire to Retire GPO role covers the finance activities to support planning, implementation, ongoing post-implementation management through to retirement/disposal of built assets (e.g. internal technology implementations, product development, etc., created via internal projects/initiatives) and bought assets (e.g. IT hardware) and the processes, systems, data structures and broader operational dependencies that support these.

Successful candidates will take pivotal roles in the change programmes able to demonstrate followership and influence at the junior, peer and senior ranks in the organization. This will need to include influencing partners, vendors, and an emerging ecosystem outside the company to act as a champion for innovation and adoption of new practices. Building an agile, well-functioning and commercially connected capital expenditure process is at the very heart of effective shareholder stewardship that this role will own.

The role will be required to understand and drive Pearson’s A2R processes across a wide range of business models and markets. As a large multinational Pearson operates across multiple territories and across a range of business models including content publishing, large scale assessment service contracts & test centres (both private and governmental), online programme management, virtual schooling etc. Several of our businesses are undergoing significant transitions with new and emerging business models being continuously developed.

This is a holistic and strategic design position that fundamentally explores broader end to end, outside in business opportunities to drive the next generation outcomes, needs and expectations. Key Activities & Responsibilities

The GPO will look to create safe and fit for purpose solutions, optimise current practices, and automate our process cycles and financial data needs to deliver an A2R process which benchmarks externally in the upper to middle quartile for efficiency, effectiveness, and cost.

  • Leads the strategic transformation of Pearson’s acquire to retire processes

  • Continuously benchmarking internal processes against best practices to determine gaps, opportunities for improvement.

  • Translates process strategy into process value drivers, process diagnostics, collateral, workflow and process maps, service objectives, performance priorities, and well-articulated process improvement plans with clear links to business performance uplift opportunities and be champions of process excellence and financial value management principles.

  • Drives and owns the delivery of multiple, often parallel improvement projects across a number of complex, varied and evolving business models.

  • Challenges current processes, expectations or operational assumptions that either directly or indirectly impact the acquire to retire processes

  • Influence, collaborate, convince, and act as advocate of the strategic process agenda across a wide network of stakeholders both at a junior, peer, senior and business wide level.

  • Takes accountability for the successful delivery of the transformation undeterred by key dependencies lying within other global teams e.g., Global Business Services, Technology etc. Seen as a strong enabler and integrator that has influence, credibility, and the impact to change the current direction of travel.

  • Bring commercial and business acumen to recognise and champion differences that enable competitive advantage and know when to leverage shared process and shared capabilities to unlock value clearly supported by data and experience.

  • Supports the creation of business policies/guidelines, KPIs and process standards and has ideas, experience and proven methods in other sectors/industries that can help provide comparable and new ways of working.

  • Ensures that operational teams are meeting expected outcomes and creates process performance uplift, adheres to the standards, and understands any significant process variations with relevant controls installed to ensure effective, robust, and measurable shareholder outcomes can be seen.

  • Reviews and owns the training materials and relevant knowledge management as well as stewarding the financial master data that is pivotal to the A2R strategy and improvement plans.

  • Ensures alignment of process improvement initiatives with business strategy making sure that all major programmes of work deliver against Pearson’s strategic objectives.

  • Spends a portion of their time acting as a finance process subject matter expert supporting wider company strategic initiatives e.g., M&A, corporate restructuring, major system implementations/upgrades etc.

Qualifications and experience required:

  • Broad experience, particularly in a large multinational organisation, of the financial processes that support planning/approval/allocation of capital spend, the purchase/build of assets and the capitalisation of these onto the balance sheet, and the depreciation/amortisation of these assets

  • Extensive experience of operating as a global process owner in Acquire to Retire/capex processes or extensive experience in transformation consultancy role in a well-respected global consultancy practice.

  • Brings extensive know-how, experience, and proven track record of third wave process re-engineering, process diagnostics, data and process science, lean principles and six sigma concepts to process creation, design, development, and delivery across complex and agile environments.

  • Provide examples of leading the strategic impact of an A2R process, understanding upstream and downstream implications, creating, and evolving the design, and agreeing where variables within this process are needed to accommodate or reflect the complexity and market propositions in the most optimal and effective manner.

  • Experience of how to manage complex political environment, manage and turnaround negative opinion and demonstrate tangible results in driving opinion at an organisation level.

  • Qualified accountant (ACA, CPA, ACCA, CIMA, etc.)

  • Experience working in a multi-national matrix organisation.

  • Experience using generic/industry models and architectures e.g., ACCORD, APQC, IAA, IFW, SCOR)

  • Proven project, programme and change management experience and demonstrated ability to champion and drive change.

  • Lean Six Sigma experience/qualification preferred.

  • Knowledge of Oracle ERP and Business Intelligence and value management applications preferred, but not essential if there is demonstrated experience in large scale ERP and BI, VM applications.

  • Fluent English verbal and written with experience of working globally across varying cultures, languages, and markets.

  • Project Leadership & Delivery: leading team resources to create, drive and deliver on a project plan even if they do not report directly. Skilled in PPM or equivalent methods, able to create work breakdown structure, plans, governance, tracking and delivery outcomes.

  • Decision Making & Strategic Judgement: understanding materiality, complex and uncertain situations, prioritization, able to make commercial, business, customer and finance process decisions that demonstrate holistic results. Able to recognise where common vs variable makes better sense for shareholder outcomes.
