Role Description

The role of Director, Market Development is pivotal to delivering on the growth promise of our English language assessment business. In a competitive global market, we need a successful unified approach to growing our Pearson Test of English (PTE) business from launch through to maturity in 50 countries.

To do this, we need to work hand-in-hand with our colleagues based in each country to scope, plan, partner with stakeholders, engage with customers and win recognition by university and government bodies. Our aim is to compete and win in each market, and in doing so provide our customers with the best possible experience.

This role is responsible for making sure that each market is supported in a consistent way, according to the maturity of the market. Specific responsibilities are listed below.

The role will be a member of the English Assessment leadership team and will report to the SVP, English Assessment. Within Pearson, English Assessment sits within the Global Product Organisation. The role will be based in the UK (London).

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver a single global framework and approach to market development for PTE that meets the evolving needs of this fast growing product portfolio.

  • Lead a global team responsible for coordinating and supporting market development across our key markets. As part of this, establish a new team in the US to grow our position in the US market, and deliver growth in recognitions by US universities.

  • Manage a team of c.12 people based in 2 countries (UK and US).

  • Set achievable yet challenging goals, provide accurate forecasts and manage an annual budget (staff costs and other operating expenses). Own the revenue target for the US market.

  • Represent Pearson at conferences and events.

  • Collate, interpret and share market and competitor intelligence to inform our strategy.

  • Design and deliver shared market development plans and resources that meet the needs of all markets.

  • Identify, sign-up and manage key external partnerships to raise awareness of PTE and reach our customer base. Manage contracts and relationships and determine appropriate investment with each partner.

Qualifications

Essential skills, qualification and experience

  • Proven skills in launching, marketing and developing sustainable education businesses in key global locations, including Asia.

  • Extensive experience in international education, including experience working for a university with a significant cohort of international students.

  • Influencing and collaborating with colleagues to form a single, global team with shared goals, regardless of reporting lines. Pearson operates in a matrix structure and this is therefore important.

  • Experience of being accountable for cost and revenue budgets.

  • Experience speaking at external events.

  • Ability to identify and analyse data to make informed decisions.

  • Excellent leadership, relationship building, negotiation, planning and communication skills.

  • Proven experience working in partnership with local market sales leadership. Experience with sales, marketing and business development – working at a global scale.

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in marketing or a similar business discipline.

  • Member of relevant Professional bodies.

  • Experience line managing and motivating a team some of whom are based in another country.

  • Ability to perform non-local travel up to 30% of time, and willing to work non-standard hours to accommodate global time zones and global travel.
