Assessment Process Leader (Quality and Improvement)

Part of UK Schools, the Assessment division combines excellence in assessment with outstanding customer experience. The Assessment division has end-to-end responsibility for delivering on-time, accurate results of high stakes UK and international qualifications to our learners and first-class customer service to all our customers.

The Assessment division comprises:

  • Delivery team - accountable for the strategic delivery of our high stakes UK and international qualifications

  • Content team - accountable for the accurate delivery of our secure high stakes UK and international assessment instruments as well as non-secure content

  • Quality and improvement team - accountable for quality assurance, post results services, improvement initiatives (including assessment monitoring), regulatory research (including consultations)

  • Strategy and customer team - accountable for delivery of assessment-related transformational, strategic and customer initiatives

  • Online assessment transformation team - accountable for delivering online transformation initiatives and support of online marking system

Part of the Quality and Improvement team, the Assessment Process Leader for Quality will be responsible for delivering a group of assessment processes across the whole department.

Key Accountabilities

Process Improvement

  • Act as the process owner for the area of responsibility ensuring processes are documented and regularly reviewed

  • Ensuring that processes for all qualifications are common, where appropriate, documenting any subject specific variations

  • Takes ownership of identifying and implementing process improvements and changes

  • Leading the response to any internal/external audits or any identified lessons learned for the area of responsibility

Assessment Improvement

  • Lead the Assessment Monitoring programme for GQA

  • Ensure training is organised and that action plans are signed off and tracked accordingly

  • Track amendments to assessments and record improvements


  • Set up and monitor quality trackers and validity monitoring reports

  • Ensure delivery teams have actions recorded for areas which need improvement

  • Compile summary reports on marking quality

  • Fulfill regulatory requests in this area

  • Lead on series to series quality improvement initiatives


  • Develop and maintain a publications catalogue for each series, ensuring relevant security permissions and series availability is communicated to IT

  • Ensure all post exam publications are produced to high quality standards and to deadline

  • Fulfill regulatory requests for exam publications

  • Ensure confidentiality of all examination content prior to results release

  • Manage the production of traditional and results plus examiner reports.

Customer focused support

  • Point of contact for internal stakeholders for area of responsibility

  • Customer communications related to area of responsibility

  • Ensuring that processes are improved to ensure a better customer experience (including IT development)

Training and support

  • Arrange training and support for Assessment, Assessment Associates and other stakeholders on key activities within the area of responsibility

  • Drafting/reviewing and approving guidance documentation for internal and external stakeholders

Key Challenges:

  • Ensuring the effective, efficient and consistent management of all activities within the area of responsibility

  • Working to tight, often immovable deadlines

  • Managing activities for multiple examination series simultaneously

  • Building and managing effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders of all levels

  • Interrogating processes to ensure they deliver high quality, on time outcomes

  • Successfully navigate change by adapting to challenges created by the introduction of new qualifications, services or processes

  • Adopting a constructive and positive approach to influencing others

  • Embed innovation by looking to the future and removing silos by working collaboratively and creatively

  • Work with the other Assessment Process Leaders to ensure consistency of approach and shared good practice.

Education, Qualifications & Training


  • Degree level or equivalent qualifications or experience.

Previous Experience


  • Experience of managing assessment processes or similar


  • Project management

IT Literacy


  • Intermediate level of ability of Microsoft Office including Outlook, Excel, Word, Powerpoint or Google Suite equivalents


  • Experience of using project management and process mapping software such as Project/Smartsheets and Visio/Lucid charts.

Personal Style and Behaviour

The role will suit a proactive individual with excellent attention to detail and a proven problem solver. The post holder will need to be computer literate and able to work to tight deadlines with the ability to work under pressure. The ability to communicate at all levels are essential.

Additional Information

The role is located at our offices at 190 High Holborn, near to the Tube and Covent Garden.

Salary for the role is £27,000 to £34,000 depending on experience
