As a key member of the Global Business Services management team, the VP Rights & Royalties is responsible for managing the operational and financial functions related to author royalties and rights on behalf of Pearson Education (PE) and Pearson Assessments worldwide. These functions include: royalties accounting, royalty operations, inclusive of statement preparation and author services, and royalty contracts administration. The VP is responsible for maintaining a secure controls environment, ensuring compliance with Pearson financial policies, managing contractual obligations, and overseeing local legal requirements, including Sarbanes-Oxley requirements. As the global process owner for royalties, the VP ensures continuous improvement of the efficiency of royalties and rights processing and works with the business to set up and accounting for new business models.

The VP of Rights and Royalties is responsible for:

  • Direct management of all aspects of royalty contracts administration, royalty operations, including statement preparation and payments, rights accounting, and author services, royalty accounting, internal and external royalty audits and global sales reporting.

  • Lead and develop key managers for each of the above functions in the US, UK, Canada, and India.

  • Respond to author audits and claims in cooperation with legal and business partners; provides audit support for permissions as well as royalties.

  • Process owner for Sarbanes-Oxley compliance for author royalties.

  • Establish and manage relationships and service standard agreements with internal and external customers.

  • Initiate and manage necessary changes in processes, personnel, technology and policy as related to royalties.

  • Identify productivity and quality improvement measures and establish a corrective course of action to improve service levels.

  • Ensure that statements are rendered in a timely and accurate basis to authors and agents.

  • Ensure that all royalty related accounts are reconciled on a regular basis to the general ledger.

  • Identify excesses or shortages in company royalty accounts and determine corrective action with divisional financial management as required.

  • Ensure compliance with all tax regulations related to reporting for authors.

  • Provide analytical information needed for yearly escheatment filings for unclaimed property.

  • Lead cross-functional and intra-departmental teams to make overall improvements to the business process and systems.

  • Ensure the team has a clear understanding of prioritized objectives and is maximizing systems to the fullest extent. Provide training to the team as needed.

  • Possess working knowledge of the team’s procedures and processes with the ability to perform specific functions of the team.

  • Prepare monthly financial metrics reports of royalty activity.

  • Coordinate monthly reporting package and summary of departmental achievements, objectives and issues.

  • Liaise with legal and portfolio management on new business models such as subscription services to ensure that royalty relevant elements are accounted for in the model.


Required experience

  • 15 years’ experience managing sophisticated royalty and customer operations functions, preferably in a high volume sales, rights and advance transaction environment.

  • Strong financial background with proven ability to anticipate outcomes and analyze the performance of the transactions that affect author accounts.

  • Experience in managing/participating in multifunctional oriented teams.

  • Knowledge of the systems necessary to support an integrated royalty services. environment with flexibility to manage transactions and accounting on multiple systems and general ledgers.

  • Demonstrated track record for accomplishing process, operational and service innovations.

  • Experience in conducting and controlling author audits and in negotiating settlements.

  • Experience with Sarbanes-Oxley process documentation and testing related to author royalty accounting and controls.

  • Undergraduate degree, or Graduate calibre and Qualified by Experience
