Pearson Director, Supply Chain Planning in Hoboken, New Jersey

Purpose of the role:

The Director, Supply Chain Planning reports to the VP – Higher Education (HE) Channels and Supply Chain Operations Management and is responsible for all HE supply chain planning and planning process improvement initiatives. The role will focus on four key planning areas for the business: demand, supply, inventory planning (in the tactical and strategic horizons), along with orchestrating the S&OP process. The Director is responsible to drive change and deliver results in key performance metrics. The role requires an individual that has demonstrated success in leading a planning organization or other key business function, is driven to improve key metrics through action and/or influence, has the ability to prioritize multiple tasks along with demonstrating the ability to articulate complex issues into a crisp, succinct, and detailed plan.

Key accountabilities:

  • Direct a team of demand and supply planning professionals within the HE Supply Chain team.

  • Meet and continuously improve performance against key business metrics such as: customer service (Fill Rate), working capital/inventory Obsolescence/provision, inventory turns), forecast accuracy (MAPE, BIAS) and S&OP adherence & maturation.

  • Drive the demand planning process and results for accuracy & service improvement, focus on understanding and aligning on the key inputs/outputs in the plan, and highlighting the associated risks/opportunities.

  • Oversee the supply planning process and alignment with the Operations, Print Buying, and Logistics functions. Strong emphasis on product prioritization, inventory holding and backorder mitigation.

  • Highlight planning constraints and develop trade-off options that must be negotiated, aligned, and managed throughout the supply chain.

  • Manage the S&OP cycle for the business. Key focus on Product Review, Demand Review and Supply Review stages of the process, improvement of key metrics, understanding of the risks/opportunities and consensus.

  • Orchestrate a weekly Sales & Operations Execution call during the back-to-school season. Focus on ensuring execution of the consensus plan and/or alignment on deviations based on new intelligence.

  • Actively engage with Global Process Owners with driving the development of and adherence to standard planning processes, tools, and ways of working. Partner with this team for continuous improvement activities to drive results and efficiencies.

  • Create a culture of challenge, partnership, and engagement that is fun and rewarding.

  • Support the function and business with ad hoc requests as needed.

  • Collaborate and align with Sales on the forecast for the season based on the latest adoptions, enrolment and returns data.

  • Collaborate with Finance to align supply plan with AOP/LE

Skills and experience

  • Displaying critical thinking skills dealing with complex Demand Planning issues, but have the ability to explain a simplistic view & deep dive when required

  • Effective communication and facilitation skills; must have the ability to ‘tell the story’

  • Ability to work on simultaneous projects, with very large amounts of data, identify key insights and summarise key findings to senior stakeholders

  • Ability and interest in managing and developing people and teams, previous experience of leading a planning team or process preferred

  • Skills in identifying trends & insights from descriptive and diagnostic analytics. Experience working with different systems (e.g. Oracle EBS, Logility, O9 Solutions, Tableau), working knowledge of SQL preferred (or willingness to learn). Ability to analyze and interpret data with advanced Excel skills

  • Previous experience in analyzing & compiling historical actuals, forecast and master data

  • Good understanding of Demand Planning and Supply Planning process and methodologies

  • B.S. degree required, MBA or M.S. in Supply Chain or other analytical discipline preferred
