Bilingual Editor Job Description

Position Location: Puerto Rico

EDUCATION, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Spanish, journalism, or other related discipline required.

  • Bilingual (extensive knowledge of English and Spanish that encompasses conversational, reading, writing, and editing abilities) preferred.

  • At least three years of bilingual/Spanish editing experience required. Two years of experience editing English and Spanish educational assessment development stimuli, items, and/or ancillary products preferred.

  • Outstanding interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of all phases of assessments, including processing, scoring, and reporting of assessments.

  • Experience leading projects, coordinating deadlines with multiple work groups, and maintaining communication required to meet objectives.

  • Strong knowledge of how to apply and/or interpret information from English and Spanish print and online editorial references (e.g., The Chicago Manual of Style , Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary , Real Academia Española , etc.)

  • Able to lead discussions, persuade as needed to reach goals effectively, and articulate risks/benefits during problem-solving efforts.

  • Able to learn quickly, demonstrate critical thinking, and make situation-appropriate decisions using sound judgment.

  • Creative, dynamic self-starter who is comfortable taking initiative and able to work against deadlines with minimum supervision.

  • Able to work collegially with teammates in multiple geographic locations to handle multiple work assignments and under extreme deadline pressure.

  • Must be able to provide tactful editorial feedback and guidance to a variety of audiences, including coworkers and customers.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of word processing and professional office applications, including Microsoft Office portfolio and Adobe Acrobat Professional required. Solid understanding of the use of HTML and XML in web publishing is desired.

  • Position will be located at the Pearson office in Carolina, Puerto Rico.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

**This position will be located in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico.

Review and edit English and Spanish test items, passages, and scenarios for grammar, punctuation, usage, and style from the initial development stage to the printed booklet or online deployment stage with a goal of 100 percent accuracy.

  • Able to review/solve mathematics problems for grades 3–8 mathematics and Algebra assessments and demonstrate sufficient familiarity with K–12 science to review content for general information.

  • Perform editorial checks for XML-based paper and online components at all stages of production. This may include providing queries/feedback regarding formatting issues, coordinating with other teams/departments to produce content, and moving materials through all phases without guidance.

  • Review curriculum materials, such as curriculum maps, essential competences, syllabi, etc.

  • Review and edit ancillary documents, such as educator guides, technical reports, parent reports, business process documentation, etc., as needed.

  • Follow established best practices for review, contribute to the development of new workflow efficiencies, and create project-specific checklists.

  • Direct tasks associated with proofreading materials and troubleshooting issues at all stages of production

  • Ensure uniformity and consistency across components.

  • Communicate effectively and work closely with other copy editors, test development managers, content specialists, psychometricians, publishing staff, program team members, and other users of assessment content.

  • Serve as an editorial point of contact for assigned projects and provide updates regarding project handling and status to project team, editorial teammates, and managing editor.

  • Review and revise editorial portion of style guides for assigned projects.

  • Work proactively with managing editor to identify training issues and resolve misunderstandings.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Travel as required for project-related meetings, if necessary
