Description

Pearson is seeking an Accessibility Specialist to join a strong team of User Experience designers, prototypers and researchers who are building the next generation of learning applications. This position will be responsible for doing accessibility reviews of web applications on both desktop and mobile, as well as providing code samples for web based solutions to accessibility problems to developers when necessary. Knowledge of both general usability and accessibility specific usability problems is required. A deep, expert level knowledge of WAI-ARIA standards, semantic HTML and JavaScript are required. Also, an understanding of accessibility guidelines such as WCAG 2, ADA Section 508 as well as Pearson’s specific accessibility guidelines, will be required to complete assigned work.

We’re looking for someone who is ready to take their in-depth knowledge of accessibility and usability on the web to help Pearson ensure that all users have the best experience possible. You should be passionate about accessibility and be ready to work with a wide variety of geographically distributed teams. Experience working with assistive technologies in Windows and Mac OS required.

High Level Responsibilities
  • Review Pearson web applications for accessibility

  • Review ePub 3 documents for accessibility

  • Provide code samples and suggestions in JavaScript and HTML/CSS

  • Work with other accessibility professionals at Pearson to maintain standards and evangelize accessibility for web applications

  • Organize requirements and work with developers to ensure that guidelines are followed and requirements are met in production applications

  • Understands the Business of Pearson:The Accessibility Specialist will be responsible for knowing and understanding the impact that accessibility has on Pearson’s business, including potential legal requirements that come into play in the multitude of courseware and software offerings that Pearson produce.

After all, you can’t call something effective if it’s not accessible to as close to 100% of the population as possible. The Accessibility Specialist will play a role in that by checking to make sure that our products are usable to everyone, regardless of abilities.

  • Collaboration:The Accessibility Specialist will be working within a geographically distributed team. Collaborating within that team is essential to the successful completion of the tasks given.

  • Learner-Obsessed:Every learner counts, and the Accessibility Specialist will work to ensure that every single learner of our products is given the best chance possible to complete their tasks.

Expected Results

Deliver reviews, code samples and other things that are needed to get the targeted products accessible for all users as specified in the given requirements. All other tasks as assigned.

Requirements
  • Expert level knowledge of:

  • Other JavaScript frameworks

  • Single page applications

  • Solid verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to manage time effectively and work in a distributed, remote environment
