This role is responsible for managing State direct and indirect taxes. Responsible for the timely and accurate preparation/review of state income tax, personal property tax and sale and use tax returns. Responsible for ensuring that information is complete, accurate and adheres to internal company policies. Responsibilities include developing tax accounting policies, procedures and controls and implementing process improvements by utilizing tax and accounting systems to automate and improve efficiencies. Required to partner with Financial reporting, Treasury, Legal, Finance as well as interaction with the Company’s external tax consultants.

Tax Compliance:

  • Manage preparation and review of U.S. income tax compliance and reporting obligations for state income tax returns

  • Manage and support the external accounting firm who prepares the sales and use tax returns for all US companies.

  • Manage and support the external accounting firm who prepares the personal property tax returns for all US companies.

  • Manage and support the external accounting firm who prepares the business licenses for all US companies.

  • Broad technical knowledge of US tax law and regulations including the state impacts of recent US income tax reform and the impact of the Wayfair case

  • Drive process improvement in the state direct and indirect areas

Tax Audits and Controversies:

  • Manage and evaluate requests for information from government officials and participate in developing strategies to successfully defend tax filing positions. Support the coordination and implementation of audit strategies. Stay up to date on tax developments and industry positions in order to accurately evaluate options and responses to requests for information.

Tax planning/Other:

  • Identify critical tax risks and issues and creatively develop and implement appropriate tax strategies aligned with Company’s objectives.

  • Assist with forecasting the impact to the Company’s effective state tax rate for the impact of tax planning matters and other business (operational) transactions.

  • Support the U.S. state transfer pricing related compliance and reporting

  • Work with M&A with the review of proposed transactions to properly advise management of state tax consequences. Support the state income tax and sales and use tax integration of business acquisitions, dispositions and restructurings.

  • Direct external tax advisors on a project-by-project basis

  • Lead continuous process improvements and integration of various aspects of the tax function to achieve optimal efficiency, effective controls, and quality.

  • Embrace technology and innovation to foster transformation to the tax function of the future

  • Other ad hoc activities requested- team members will have continuing opportunities to work on special projects and other growth promoting activities.

Leadership and Teamwork:

  • Ability to interface at high levels and work with cross-functional and cross-border teams.

  • Participate in training and developing team members.

  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with corporate partners.

  • Ability to interact with all levels and areas of an organization including Treasury, Legal, Finance, Business operations and to able manage external advisers.

Qualifications

The successful candidate is a team player who is organized, self-motivated, able to multi-task, focused on improving processes, able to grasp new concepts quickly, able to analyze large amounts of data and is comfortable dealing with both internal and external customers in a fast-paced environment.

Desired Requirements:

  • CPA or Masters in Taxation

  • Effective Project management skills

  • Big four accounting experience.

  • Experience with Onesource income tax software (OIT)

  • Experience with Vertex software

  • Ability to prioritize competing projects.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Effective presentation skills.
