The role

We are looking for a Product Design Manager with exceptional design, communication, and people management skills, to lead strategic projects in the digital Language Learning space, working directly for the Director of Product Design for languages, Benny Zuffolini.

In this role, you'll be a foundational member of our team, working alongside your counterparts in Design, UX Research, Content Design, and Product, Engineering, and Marketing to shape the strategy, operations, and communications that guide the team to build great products. Product Designers at Pearson are embedded within deeply collaborative product teams, and each member is directly responsible for the team's success.

You will be expected to utilise your full range of people management skills, product strategy, product design, UX design, and leading initiatives representing your team's work with confidence. You will be challenged in an organisation that values vision, execution, and solving complex problems in simple, elegant ways.

Key Accountabilities

  • Be the domain expert in your product area, collaboratively shaping a design vision for our products that supports the wider Product and Design roadmaps and goals while advocating for user needs

  • Partner with other disciplines such as Content Strategists, UX Researchers, Product Managers, Engineers, and more to build forward-looking, user-centric products of the highest quality

  • Lead design critiques/reviews sessions, encouraging everyone to receive and provide productive feedback, raising the bar both on design work and on its presentation

  • Mentor and guide designers through their skills and career development, helping them set goals based on their unique strengths

  • Lead projects and epics alongside your Product counterparts, supporting and reviewing designs, user research and testing, lending a hand where needed

  • Proactively build relationships within Design and across departments, seek knowledge and opportunities for impact

  • Help establish and maintain effective design processes, in collaboration with Design Ops and Project Management Operations

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Extensive experience as an in-house UX professional in digital product companies

  • A “portfolio”, or ability to present case studies, showcasing your experience in:

  • Leading a team of UX professionals through high-impact UX projects, pushing the envelope of mobile and web experiences

  • Understanding the relationship of visual, interaction, and content disciplines

  • Agile/Lean UX or similar methods/Mobile-first design

  • People management and team culture style

  • Partnering with Product, Engineering, Marketing and/or Content disciplines to deliver on business goals

  • Comfortable engaging in discussions and challenging/be challenged on concepts and solutions, be it with peers or with senior management

  • Highly collaborative, able to lead while bringing stakeholders and team members along in the journey and valuing their contribution

  • Creative problem solver, able to think outside the box, engage people’s strengths and assess when more help or specialisms are needed to meet requirements and timelines

  • Self-organised, can be relied upon for overseeing projects and people while giving appropriate visibility to stakeholders and senior management

  • Excellent presentation and storytelling skills

  • Comfortable with complex, open-ended projects that may pivot while being able to approach them with positive influence, helping support product partners in the definition of requirements

  • While this role is not expected to be hands-on regularly, you will need to have working knowledge of Figma and experience running research projects in order to guide others
