Pearson Senior Technical Project Manager in American Fork, Utah

As a Senior Technical Project Manager in our PMO, you will be responsible for ensuring that project delivery objectives are achieved following established business goals and requirements.

In this role, the Project Manager will work closely with Key Stakeholders throughout the business to initially build out the policies, processes, definitions, templates, and other artifacts and/or tools needed to define and implement a function for the business.

Additionally, this role will have the opportunity to facilitate and direct activities to deliver projects according to established financial, schedule, and quality objectives while focusing on maintaining best practices and ensuring quality in the whole process. Knowledge and experience with process engineering, 3rd party vendor management practices, software development release process, and project life cycles will be integral to this role.

The Senior Technical Project Manager will:

  • Develop a deep understanding of the technologies associated with their assigned programs.

  • Simultaneous management and coordination of several high-impact projects (often those associated with new products and technologies).

  • Plan, organize, and create content development roadmaps that span multiple teams, including software engineers, quality assurance engineers, subject matter experts, internal stakeholders, 3P vendors, and company leadership.

  • Gather and understand full project requirements and work closely with the team to deliver on those requirements.

  • Develop best practices to ensure that the program's scope, ROI, objectives, and success metrics are understood, measured, and reported to leadership.

  • Identify technology dependencies and bottlenecks while working with the program team and stakeholders to drive programs to completion.

  • Deliver outstanding results through constant cross-functional communication, conflict resolution, and proper decision-making.

  • Lead the team to exercise good judgment in balancing time to market, product quality, and operationalization.

  • Run processes and meetings that accelerate, not hinder, team velocity.

  • Identify and appropriately escalate risks and resource conflicts.

  • Identify tasks, assignments, and dependencies based on a project charter and scope, and then on a separate line identify target dates based on tasks, dependencies, and resource constraints.

  • Determine resource roles needed and work with management to secure project team members.

  • Identify and assign duties, responsibilities, and scope of authority to project team personnel.

  • Be the liaison between the product development team and the content development team to bring products through the full product development lifecycle; on-spec, and on time.

  • Be accountable for schedules and report progress regularly to all stakeholders while mitigating risks along the way.

  • Keep the focus on priorities while shielding the team from distractions and interferences.

  • Be an advocate, but not zealot, for agile development best practices across the organization.

  • Act as a focal point for project problem resolution and escalation.

  • Ensure the quality provided and delivered meets that agreed in the plan.

  • Ensure PMO Governance and project best practices are followed.

  • Manage delivery customer expectations.

  • Manage vendor relations, as appropriate.

  • Establish conditions for project closure and manage closure.

  • Remote position - Salt Lake Co. and Utah Co., UT preferred.


Required Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience

  • 7+ years of previous project management experience

  • Able to challenge and influence a variety of stakeholders

  • Experience in simultaneously managing multiple projects

  • Experience in working with 3rd-party delivery model and structure

  • Experience in vendor management

  • Strong listening, oral, and written communications skills

Desired Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Knowledge of software development life cycle (SDLC) processes

  • Experience with process improvement certifications (CMMI, CBPP) is a plus

  • Ability to adopt and adapt the right project management framework for a given project

  • Ability to understand diverse technologies and how they play together

  • Business and product process design and implementation preferred

  • Leadership and team-building skills a must

  • Problem-solving skills required

  • Coordination skills a must

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required

  • Self-starter orientation

  • Conflict management experience required

  • Ability to deal with change

  • Strong business acumen

  • PMP Certification preferred

  • Process certification preferred (CMMI, CBPP, ISO 9001)
