The UX/UI Designer has the proven ability to combine art and technology to communicate ideas. The incumbent will design layout and composition for graphic user interface, interaction and information design and champion the user experience. This position works closely with the Media Development team to integrate image and typography, sound, and/or video; Editorial and other cross-functional teams on product development. Utilize user data to improve design and user experience. The Designer may perform limited amount of web programming and coding.


  • Requires minimum of 3 to 5 years in web and UX design

  • Experience in print design, book and ePub production an asset

  • Education typically acquired via Bachelor’s degree or appropriate combination of education and experience; Interactive Media, User Experience, Graphic Design equivalent preferred

  • Experience designing for educational programs and technology is preferred


  • Be able to communicate design recommendations both written and verbally.

  • Understanding of GUI development principles, techniques, tools and technologies across all platforms.

  • Ability to rapidly sketch ideas in various media—in words, through graphics, or programmatically.

  • Understanding of vector-based and bit-depth, pixel-density graphics and resolution issues.

  • Knowledge of file formats and tradeoffs.

  • Understanding how to design for accessibility, and AODA compliance.

  • Experience and fluency in HTML 5, JavaScript, CSS and XML and others as necessary.

  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies; flexible and adaptive to any given situation.

  • Ability to work well in a team environment, accept responsibility for successful project completion.

  • Ability to schedule and complete work assignments with little or no direct supervision.

  • Outstanding ability to solve highly complex problems, develop reasonable solutions and practical work-arounds.

Other Requirements:

  • Create and present designs based on marketing and key stakeholder specifications according to deadlines set by project management.

  • Responsible for providing final image and text files for online partners according to their specifications when needed.

  • Provide project status reports and point out potential problems or concerns to Team Lead or manager.

  • Communicate with Editorial, Media Development, Marketing, Project management and to troubleshoot any design issues.

  • Create related elements for each project following industry specifications.

  • Drive the development and communication of the user design process for a given project.

  • Participate in the research, analysis, prototyping, development, and testing phases of the design process including some interaction with customers.

  • Design web pages and layouts, icon design and pixel-level design.

  • Designs and develops user interfaces features, site animation and special effects elements.

  • May handle web programming and coding responsibilities.

  • Contributes to the design group’s effort to enhance the appeal of the organization’s online offerings by focusing on efficacy and advocating for the user

  • .Ability to handle a high volume of work in a short period of time, handle multiple priorities simultaneously and operate in a demanding work environment is important
