Background Information:

The Production Project Manager is responsible for the production and quality control of assigned program components or projects – from manuscript turnover to finished product within defined schedule, budget, and quality guidelines. Projects can include print text, etext, and supplements such as PPTs, Test banks and Instructor/Student Manuals. Exercise judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate actions.

Purpose of the role:

• Functions as a primary production stakeholder for assigned programs internal and external to the organization

• Successfully utilize and apply their knowledge of publishing and/or production process and procedures in strategic and proactive manner

• Assignments range low to high complexity in nature

• Resolves questions and problems and independently analyzes, more complex issues, knows when to escalate an issue.

Key Accountabilities & Deliverables:

● Manages all aspects of production from manuscript release through delivery of finished products (print and digital, main and supplements)

● Ensures product adheres to the project plan and meets Pearson standards and requirements..

● Manages vendors performing production activities and act as primary decision maker regarding production of product; monitor and validate vendor performance in terms of schedule, budget, and quality.

● Works with authors and other content creators (directly or indirectly) during production , providing guidance and support, and ensuring deliverables

● Communicates project status to all stakeholders, and performs reporting on projects as required. Leads regular meetings with all key stakeholders and works to identify and remediate project risks.

● Maintains close collaboration with and accountability to the Program Manager..

● Creates and monitors project schedules; tracks project milestones, identifies problem areas before they impact the project and coordinates corrective actions.

● Creates and manages project budgets, communicates problems, and works with the Program Manager to remediate.

● Work with the Rights & Permissions team to ensure that all required permissions are secured for project; work with author and/or vendor to remediate permissions issues during production.

● Manages interior design or works with Pearson Art Director; reviews covers for print and digital instances.

● Maintains key product information in production systems (i.e. PCS, EPM, Smartsheet).

● Issues work for hire contracts and purchase orders and manages invoices through payment.

● Supports use of authoring tools selected with the author, Program Manager and Development team.

Additional Responsibilities:

● Facilitate Author training in process and tools

● Manage sample chapters or chapters for marketing purposes

● Manage discrete content for digital products as needed.

Candidate Profile:

Competencies

● Excellent oral and written communication skills in English

● Ability to create and manage project schedules and budgets

● Ability to set agendas and lead successful meetings

Core Technical/Technical Competencies:

Essential:

● Strong computer skills with a proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Acrobat.

Desired:

Familiarity with InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and understanding of XML and content workflows a plus

Education, Qualifications & Training

Essential:

● This position requires a Bachelor’s degree

● Requires 3 years of editorial/content and project management experience.

Desirable:

● Professional Project Management or equivalent Certification preferred

Previous Experience

Essential:

● Understanding of production and editorial processes, print and digital product workflows

● Demonstrated author and vendor management

● Fundamental understanding of rights and permissions research and clearance

Desirable:

● Experience in negotiating; executing contracts, creating work for hire agreements and purchase orders
