B1.1- Associate IP Auditor


Background Information:

Commercial publishing is underpinned by and dependent on effective management of intellectual property.

Reporting to AM, IP Auditing Services, two IP Auditors are required. The profile involves auditing of existing Pearson products to assess the status of the intellectual property and to identify whether the content can be reused through new Pearson platforms in order to exploit new market opportunities, or whether additional clearances are required.


  • To receive packages of content that have been selected for ingestion into Pearson platforms and to carry out a detailed assessment of the intellectual property (ranging from author contracts for commissioned material, to third party rights agreements) and to create an itinerary of all assets used within a product

  • To request and review all relevant contracts that document the intellectual property of assessed content to establish whether such items can be reused by Pearson or whether rights restrictions apply

  • For each product audited, create a report that presents the intellectual property status of the content and which highlights where items may require additional clearance so that relevant platform teams understand whether or not they can use content

Key Accountabilities & Deliverables:

  • Logging and prioritising content packages for auditing

  • Conducting thorough, in depth audits of content to establish what rights Pearson has to the content and whether re-clearances or additional clearances are required for the content to be ingested into platforms

  • For each product audited, create a comprehensive report at asset level, detailing every item of content used within a product and the rights associated with it

  • For every item of content checked, build and maintain a simple archive of associated documents, ensuring that key security principles are maintained

  • Where any potential risks are highlighted through IP audits, notify and liaise with the senior management

  • Where required, manage copyright clearances for the reuse of third party content, strictly following Pearson processes and using the Pearson Rights Capture database

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Where time allows, work with Pearson International Rights & Permissions Managers to facilitate third party copyright clearance.

  • Where time allows, assist on rights related projects of any description to help with backlog rights projects.

  • Ability to retain a great level of detail to ensure that all items of content are audited

  • Know when to identify and escalate issues

  • Working in an international team where there are multiple languages and time zones to balance

Candidate Profile:


Core Technical/Functional Competencies:

  • Excellent understanding of all intellectual property rights, especially copyright

  • Fluent English speaker

  • Proven experience of having worked in a copyright management function

  • Knowledge and understanding of rights management systems

  • Ability to create and maintain content logs

  • Excellent documentation and presentation skills (to senior management level)

  • Highly organized with the ability to work to and meet deadlines

  • Excellent communication skills and understanding of how information should be presented to get across important issues to different groups of stakeholders

  • Proactive in seeking information, challenging norms and driving efficiency

  • Demonstrates the ability to effectively assess and resolve complex issues and problems


  • Previous experience in delivery of successful projects

  • Strong communication skills in English (verbal, written, listening). The ability to get messages clearly understood by adopting a range of styles, tools and techniques appropriate to the audience and the nature of the information.

  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to understand and communicate terminology.

  • Strong Microsoft Office skills with advanced Excel, Project and PowerPoint capabilities.


  • The candidate should have an interest in publishing, intellectual property and content management

Education, Qualifications & Training


  • Degree/ diploma or equivalent work experience


  • Formal qualifications to support skills e.g.specialization in IP, PGDIPR or equivalent certification

  • Any additional languages spoken are highly desirable, especially Spanish and Portuguese.

Previous Experience


  • At least 1 year of experience working in copyright management or intellectual property related field with basic MS Office skills


  • Minimum 2 years of experience working in the publishing, media or digital industries with excellent MS Office skills (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
