The Sustainability & SocialInnovation team's role is to work collaboratively with teams across Pearson toensure our business practices and processes contribute to addressing thesocial, economic and environmental needs of society in a way that also createsbusiness value.

Summary of Role

The Sustainability Managermanages the collection,tracking and reporting of social sustainability data for the company. He/shewillcoordinate across corporate departments tomeasure and communicate progress on global sustainability initiatives.He/she will be responsible for the annualSustainability Report, working with the Sustainability Director to ensure aconsistent and coherent approach to sustainability across the company.

Mainactivities / responsibilities

Project management

  • Workwith the Sustainability Director to develop global Sustainability goals, metrics,and data systems that support delivery of our 2020 Sustainability Plan.

  • Leadpreparation of the company’s annual Sustainability Report (GRI Report),including by: working across departments to prepare messaging and content,managing external consultants, coordinating appropriate internal and externalpromotional activities.

  • Assistwith special projects such as: conducting issue-specific research; preparinganalysis for meetings, presentations and conferences; building networks ofinternal sustainability champions.

Data management andanalysis

  • Establishand maintain strong global systems for collecting, tracking and reporting sustainabilitydata, coordinating across regions and departments to assess accuracy andcompleteness of data and to implement process improvements.

  • Regularlyanalyze Pearson’s sustainability performance and progress toward meetingcorporate goals; recommend and drive improvements based on identifiedperformance gaps, emerging requirements, market trends, and externalbenchmarking.

  • Providesustainability performance updates to senior management on a regular basis.

  • Createand present compelling, evidence-based written and visual summaries ofsustainability performance for both internal and external audiences, includingexecutive dashboards, scorecards, slide decks, and reports


  • Workwith the Sustainability Director to design and implement global stakeholderengagement initiatives related to sustainability.

  • Workcollaboratively with relevant colleagues to develop materials promoting our2020 Sustainability Plan and activities via the company intranet, website andother digital channels.

  • Manageresponse to requests for sustainability information, eg fielding generalenquiries, preparing survey responses, and drafting award applications.

  • RepresentPearson at sustainability events and conferences.


The successful candidate will have:

  • A Bachelor’sDegree(Master’s preferred) in sustainability or a related field

  • At least 3-5 years of relevant experience, preferably managing, analyzing, and reporting on sustainability performance in a large company

  • Strong knowledge of current tools and trends in sustainability, and the methods with which sustainability can be integrated into business operations. Familiarity with data management platforms and GRI reporting preferred.

  • Excellent analytical, project management, and oral/written communication skills

  • Ability to:

  • Write, edit and present compelling content

  • Perform quantitative tasks with speed and accuracy, including collection and management of data

  • Manage multiple tasks, set priorities, and proactively problem solve

  • Work across departments to achieve mutually beneficial results

  • Proficiency with MS office suite of products with strong Excel capabilities

  • Strong interpersonal skills and a passion for driving sustainability achievements.
