PURPOSE

Lead and manage the University Partnerships team within our UK Higher Education business

Purpose

This role has full responsibility for our UK University Partnerships (online programme management) business, partnering with selected, world-class Higher Education Institutions to deliver high quality online programmes to students in the UK and around the world.

The Vice President will shape our strategy and be accountable for business development, market research, business case and P&L delivery, domestic and international marketing, recruitment services, student retention and other managed services. As the business expands, the Vice President will create the necessary infrastructure to support our growth, in particular with regard to people and technology.

The Vice President will partner with colleagues in the Global Product and Higher Education Service Delivery teams to ensure the programmes we support, and the services we provide, deliver a world-class student experience, allowing learners to flourish in an online (and in some cases a blended) environment.

The role forms a key part of the wider UK Higher Education leadership team. The Vice President will work closely with other members of the leadership team in shaping the overall strategy for our division, and for ensuring we deliver on the very real and exciting opportunities for our business.

Key responsibilities

Strategy

  • Defining the strategy for University Partnerships, with input from the Senior Vice President and other Leadership Team members

  • Evolving the value proposition for managed services in the UK, with a clear focus on student experience and learner outcomes

  • Maintaining a detailed understanding of, and responding to the competitive and regulatory environment

  • Partnering with colleagues in Global Product and other markets to ensure alignment and sharing of best practice

  • Leveraging Pearson’s global expertise as we build our UK business

  • Reviewing lessons learned from previous managed services activities in the UK and elsewhere

Market profiling and prioritisation

  • Working with colleagues to gather and analyse relevant international market data, trends, research

  • Establishing selection criteria for institutions and programmes using qualitative and quantitative measures

  • Designing clearly prioritised prospecting plan, leveraging wider HE sales team (BDMs and consulting) to maximise coverage

Business development

  • Executing prospecting plan

  • Assessing existing opportunities and progressing as appropriate

  • Leveraging wider HE sales team (BDMs and consulting) to maximise coverage (developing appropriate hand offs)

  • Developing KPIs and reporting regularly against the sales funnel / pipeline

Partner engagement

  • Forming and maintaining strong relationships with senior stakeholders in partner organisations

  • Understanding and contributing to partner strategic vision

  • Being an advocate of the university brand, of online / blended learning, and of the role of technology in enabling education

  • Conducting institutional and programme readiness assessments

  • Building partnership vision, value proposition and strategic account plan

  • Supporting change management activities within partner institutions to facilitate programme selection, development and launch

Financial and contract management

  • Designing overall P&L and associated KPIs to deliver revenue and contribution in line with operating and strategic plan

  • Working with functional leaders to ensure their P&Ls are adhered to

  • Working with finance, legal and Global Product to design and negotiating partnership contracts that build competitive advantage and reflect best practice

Student marketing & recruitment

  • Profiling existing and likely target students

  • Designing marketing strategy with functional leader

  • Recruiting dedicated marketing staff

  • Agreeing decision making principles with partner and obtain sign-offs

  • Executing campaign plans

  • Analysing and reporting results, amending plans as required

  • Designing recruitment plan from RFI to offer accepted

  • Building necessary infrastructure to support recruitment such as CRM/student management system, telesales, email, live chat, open days etc

  • Partnering with colleagues in Global Product and other markets to ensure alignment, sharing of best practice and driving efficiencies in acquisition costs (CPL)

Course design & delivery

  • Working with HE Service Delivery team, Global Product and Pearson functional leaders to develop differentiated, world-class student experience

  • Utilising high quality content and robust technology to enhance experience

  • Ensuring clear focus on learner outcomes, partnering with Efficacy team to build and develop systems and data to report and track

Continuing professional development

  • Working with partner to understand training needs particular to distance learning

  • Building CPD offering in collaboration with functional leaders

  • Deploying training with partners as required

Student engagement and retention

  • Analysing student engagement and satisfaction data

  • Creating retention plans for new students, low-risk students, high-risk students

  • Intervening with at-risk students

  • Running student satisfaction surveys

Management and leadership

  • Managing the functional leaders as a coherent, high performance team to deliver against plans

  • Providing leadership and direction to the University Partnership team and wider organisation

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

This is a senior role, and candidates will be required to demonstrate relevant leadership experience in a similar position. Specifically the successful candidate will need to demonstrate a proven track record of:

  • Delivering £5m annual revenues through university partnership programmes, with a minimum of 5 years in a senior management role in a similar business

  • Developing high performing teams which work to common purposes and achieve goals consistently

  • Strong business development and negotiation skills, with proven track record of closing and developing partner relationships

  • In-depth knowledge of the global Higher Education market

  • Creating and delivering revenue plans and forecasts, and implementing systems and processes to monitor performance

  • Successfully operating in a matrix structure, building consensus across multiple stakeholders

  • Contributing strategically to a business or organisation at a senior management level

  • Influencing, collaborating and networking both internally and with external stakeholders, suppliers and customers

  • Scoping and delivering internal conferences / training / communication events

  • Excellence in written and verbal communications and presentations

  • Ability to travel across the UK
