PositionSummary

ProgrammeManagement is an operational resource within Pearson UK. Our goal is todeliver, on behalf of the business, initiatives that support strategicobjectives and achievement of benefits - through a repeatable deliveryframework and skilled programme/project experts. Our main focus is to supportthe UK’s ‘Must Wins’ and delivering change successfully across our market’sportfolio of projects and programmes.

TheProject Manager will be responsible for shaping and managing the delivery ofprojects across the UK Customer Experience Programme, tracking their associatedbusiness outcomes to the project Steering Committee/Programme Board andsponsor/stakeholders. Projects characteristics will typically be:

  • Projects with the objectives of significantlyimproving the offer to our customers, based around 5 key themes, culture,business systems, organisational design, quality assurance and our website,

  • Project in locations across the UK business

  • Working with teams of up to 15 resources, knownvendors and resources

Main responsibilities will include:

The Project Manager is accountable for the end toend delivery of small to medium business initiatives from inception to closedown. During delivery, the Project Manager has full responsibility for theproject deliverables and their acceptance, and reports progress issues andsuccesses to the Project Sponsor and Steering Committee (or Programme Board ifapplicable). The Project Manager will also need to ensure project governanceacross all UK CX initiatives, offering support to the business and aligningreporting. Project Managers responsibilities include:

1) Managing the early inception andinitiation of projects with business owners; defining the project approach andestimating the project delivery with subject matter experts; supporting projectsuccess and achieving business benefits with a correctly structured andresourced project delivery team

  • Advising business stakeholders so that projectsalign with the Global CX Programme

  • Supporting the development of additional businesscases where required.

  • Planning and defining the end of end projectrequired to achieve business outcomes based on best practice project/programmemanagement techniques

  • Defining an appropriate delivery approach, peerreviewed and validated by experts

  • Facilitating project estimating with set tolerancesand an agreed risk profile

  • Setting and agreeing the project budget with theproject sponsor, agreeing budget tolerances

  • Resourcing the project phases appropriately withthe correct team experience, skills and roles

2) Managing the end to end delivery ofthe project, ensuring alignment to business objectives and benefits withaccountability for the project’s successful (budget, schedule, quality)

  • Ensure a good understanding of the business unitconcerned including understanding the key objectives and challenges

  • Creating and maintaining project controls such asstatus reports, issues and risk logs, change registers

  • Taking accountability for dependency, risk andissue management; managing their mitigation across scope, time and budget; andimpacts on technology (if applicable) and business domains

  • Managing and tracking the project budget and costs(including the lifetime costs)

  • Creating, updating and tracking project performanceto the overall project plan

  • Proposing solutions to major issues, seekingacceptance from project sponsor and Steering Committee

  • Managing the quality of deliverables to defined andagreed acceptance criteria

  • Communicating effectively to project sponsor,Steering Group and stakeholders, translating ‘project delivery speak’ to‘business terminology’ to promote business confidence and buy-in

  • Leading, supporting and motivating the projectteam; leading by example and driving project momentum and energy, addressingperformance issues

  • Completing effective project closedown, includinglessons learnt log

3) Managing the involvement of Pearsonstakeholders in project delivery, building a single team of business andtechnology resources (if applicable, for digital projects), and supportingtheir participation in the definition and acceptance of the solution

  • Supporting the business owner in tracking benefitsand realisation plans

  • Ensuring that all key stakeholder groups areinvolved throughout the project lifecycle, supporting the transition intoOperations

  • Managing business change/readiness in a mannersympathetic to the business and designed to ensure clarity and understanding ofthe changes being implemented.

  • Ensure change impact of a project is conducted andincorporated into the plan

  • Communicating to all stakeholder to maintain buy-inand confidence in the project delivery

  • Identifying and implementing change managementtechniques to ensure the adoption of the solution and return of investment isachieved

4) Adopting and contributing to thedevelopment of Programme Management practice and defined project managementmethodology

  • Identifying and contributing to initiatives set outto help develop project management, best practice and team learning

  • Participating in group workshops to generate ideasand plan the implementation of team initiatives

Qualifications

Required Knowledge and Experience

Related work experience

  • Project management experience in managing small tomedium-sized cross-functional teams

  • Experience of delivering business change projects

  • Proven track record of influencing senior levelmanagement and stakeholders

  • Change Management experience would be desirable

Formal education or equivalent

  • Strong academic grounding – good undergraduatedegree (desirable)

  • PRINCE Practitioner or equivalent
