TheQualification Department (QD) is a core function of Pearson QualificationServices (PQS). QD leads on the design, development and accreditation ofPearson qualifications, including GCE and GCSE, BTEC, work-based learning andinternational qualifications.

QDis committed to producing high-quality, error-free, customer-friendly materials,the role of Senior Project Editor is key to helping us meet this commitment.The overall objective of the role is to ensure that QD materials meet editorialquality standards, for example that they are audience appropriate, meetcustomer need, are free of grammatical and other language-related errors.

TheSenior Project Editor will manage a range of qualification-related projects,working with a high level of autonomy. They will take responsibility forensuring that projects are of high quality and that they are delivered on timeand to budget. The post holder will provide an editorial lead on complexprojects.

Amajor part of the role is to commission and contract freelance editors andproofreaders. The post holder will ensure that freelancers are fully briefed,coordinating their workload, quality checking their work and giving themconstructive feedback. The role requires liaison with key members of thedevelopment teams and with colleagues and stakeholders across the business.

KeyRole-specific Deliverables


  • Copy-edit and proofread qualification materials toquality and deadline, meeting customer expectations.

  • Keep up to date with changes and developments inhouse style and with changes to the English language.

  • Put checks in place to ensure quality of content.

  • Explain editorial decisions to developers and otherswhose work has been edited.

  • Give advice and guidance on editorial issues.

Freelanceeditor management

  • Identify and select appropriate freelance editorsfor each job, produce clear briefs, give appropriate support and constructivefeedback.

  • Recruit new freelance editors and develop existingcontacts.

  • Manage contracting and payment of freelance editors.

  • Identify and achieve cost savings where possible.


  • Take an editorial lead on complex projects.

  • Take the lead when working with freelance editors.

Communication,liaison and scheduling

  • Liaise and negotiate with stakeholders to establish realisticand achievable deadlines.

  • Work collaboratively, and communicate proactivelyand appropriately with members of the project and development teams.

  • Work with developers and other key stakeholders toschedule and coordinate editorial resources to meet editorial and publishingdeadlines.

  • Produce editorial schedules.

  • Find creative ways of keeping schedules on track.

  • Ensure that projects are delivered on time and toquality, resolving any problems at an

early stage.

  • Prepare management information reports.


  • Strive for continuous improvement ineditorial quality.

  • Work with the Editorial Manager and theQuality Assurance and Control Manager in developing editorial quality criteriaand processes.

  • Carry out editorial induction training fornew members of QD.

  • Contribute to raising the level of editorialskill and accuracy in QD by working with the Editorial Manager in planning andimplementing editorial training sessions.

PreviousWork Experience


  • Significant previous experience in an editorialrole or equivalent.

  • Able to use industry standard copy-editing andproofreading conventions.

  • Used to working under pressure and to deadline.

  • Able to work as part of a team and individually.

  • Confident and effective dealing with people at alllevels.

  • Able to plan, organise and prioritise.


  • Experience of working in an educationalenvironment, familiar with educational terminology.

  • Experience of delivering training and briefingothers.

  • Proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office suite.

  • Able to edit onscreen using Word track changes andother similar applications.


  • Knowledge of styles and document layout.

  • Knowledge of XML.

Education,Qualifications & Training


  • Proven excellent command of the English language.

  • Degree or relevant vocational qualification, orextensive experience in a relevant discipline.

Please note, this role is initially for a 6-month contract. There may be scope for this to extend or become permanent.
