The Engineering Director for Mobile is responsible for oversight of user experience development for mobile and mobile first application development; the successful candidate will resolve complex business problems using his/her substantial mobile and mobile-first strategy, development, industry and consumer or enterprise experience. The position requires the ability to build relationships, collaboratively develop and publish mobile and mobile-first strategy based on industry standards, data and trends, dig deeply into technical details, and deliver against multiple product and business roadmaps. This person directs and oversees the front-end development activities and staff in the Learning Services Technology, Platform Development organization; directly supervises and coordinates employees and contractors for over 30 scrum teams; and will be responsible to implement transition to common capabilities, services and API based development.

What you will be doing…

  • Collaboratively develop and publish mobile and mobile first strategy with contribution / linkages to services strategy based on demonstrated consumer or enterprise experience.

  • Provide oversight of development for a complex portfolio of new and existing mobile and mobile first platforms delivered to educators and learners at web scale.

  • Coordinate with services teams on interface design / blueprints.

  • Ensure highest quality (unit testing, integration testing, and code reviews, best practices, etc.)

  • Manage schedules.

  • Facilitate communication among / between product teams, cross-functional teams, senior management and executives.

  • Coordinate multiple agile scrum teams to help plan, scope, and develop new product capabilities.

  • Develop proof-of-concept projects to test / validate solutions.

  • Develop / support a team of world-class mobile and mobile-first developers.

  • Plan the refactoring and re-architecting of existing software.

  • Manage development documentation.

  • Other duties as required.


What we are looking for…

  • BS in Computer Science or equivalent combination of education and experience; Advanced degree a plus.

  • 10 years of experience architecting and delivering multi-tier web and mobile applications.

  • 5 years of experience managing teams of mobile software developers for native and non-native mobile apps.

  • Successful and demonstrable delivery of a cross-platform portfolio of mobile and mobile-first applications on Chrome, iOS, Android, Windows and web to various app stores / other deployment mechanisms.

  • Experience building user interfaces against SaaS / cloud-based micro services.

  • Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills a must.

  • Strong experience with mobile and mobile-first frameworks and web technologies including Obj-C, Swift, Java, JavaScript, jQuery, AJAX.

  • Ability to lead design sessions and participate in architecture and code reviews.

  • Capacity to work collaboratively on cross functional teams and with remote teams.

  • Hiring and training a team of world-class developers.

  • Ability to manage performance of engineers and managers, and prescribe appropriate remedies for issues.
