The Content Development Specialist inthe Content Development group is involved in three critical areas within theteam: Digital Content Development: Standards, Best Practices, and Reporting;Third Party Relationships; and Pearson Digital Product Initiatives. In thisrole the Content Development Specialist is accountable for planning, digitalcontent best practices standards creation, onboarding, and support for authorsand internal/external content partners. In addition, this role collaborateswith portfolio managers and cross-functional teams to plan, resource, and pilotcontent to serve key Pearson strategic initiatives in the Higher Educationdisciplines and markets. The role of the Content Development Specialist is ahigh profile position that requires enthusiasm, agility, creativity, diplomacy,and critical thinking skills. Thisposition reports to the Director of Content Development and is based in thePearson Boston office.


Specific responsibilities include, butare not limited to, the following. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

Digital Content Development: Standards, BestPractices, and Reporting

In collaboration with the Director of ContentDevelopment, the Content Development Specialist will be responsible for thefollowing:

  • Participate in thecreation of standards, best practices, processes and training materials forcontent creation, development, and revision

  • Coordinate andparticipate in training workshops for authors, internal teams, SMEs , thirdparty content providers, development editors, instructional designers,assessment authors, and others to rollout our digital content guidelines

  • Manage thecommunication of status reporting, risk potential, schedule maintenance,potential red flags, and overall budget tracking on programs in developmentthrough the establishment of a common reporting system across product teamsinternally and externally

  • Regularly meet andreport progress to the Director of Content Development to discuss program progress, troubleshoot risks and dependencies,identify and remedy gaps throughout the content development process to helpimprove efficiencies and increase communication across Pearson

Third-Party Relationships

Incollaboration the Director of Content Development, the Content DevelopmentSpecialist will be responsible for the following:

  • Identify new thirdparty partnerships and review existing partnerships to establish standards and guidelines for contentdeliverables

  • Working with the Directorof Content Development and team, set up meetings with third party contentproviders and aid in the assessment of expertise, skill sets, ability to handlevolume, quality and consistency of deliverables, samples, successes in themarket, agility in handling content and/or schedule changes, and overall fit with Pearson standards andrequirements

  • Establish andnegotiate rates and contracts with third-party content providers thatreflect Pearson’s standards andrequirements

  • Conduct regularreviews of the content vendors’ processes, budget and schedule maintenance andidentify efficiencies and opportunities to improve workflow and costs acrossdisciplines

  • Create and maintain a3rdparty content provider database including data onspecializations, quality ratings, capacity, contribution to product success,education, rates, and compliance with Pearson third party and IndependentContractor standards

  • Maintain third party,Independent Contractor agreements and provide and regulate access to Pearsoncontent and systems regularly to comply with Pearson standards

  • Participate in onboarding new third party content providers including review of deliverables,schedule, status reporting, template and systems use, content turnover and QAprocess orientation and training

  • Provide outstandingthird party content provider support. Be responsive and timely in responding toquestions, concerns, requests and escalation of problems to the Director ofContent Development

Pearson Digital Product Development and Key Initiatives

Incollaboration the Director of Content Development and the VPs of PortfolioManagement, the Content Development Specialist will be responsible for thefollowing:

  • Work with the Directorof Content Development and each VP of Portfolio Management to plan, manage anddeliver the program portfolio on time, on budget, and within scope

  • Serve as point personon major HSSL, Business & Economics, and pan-Pearson initiatives and newdigital product development to implement cross-functional, pan-Pearsonstandards, budgeting, deliverables, and schedules

  • Identify and manageproject tracks necessary for the successful completion of the project

  • Manage work that hasbeen outsourced to vendors including workflow, schedule, project tracking,milestones, QA, and budget as assigned

  • Identify and manageproject dependencies and identify resource needs

  • Work with internaland external customers to develop project scope of work and create and maintainproject plans

  • Workwith third party vendors, internal stakeholders, and management to clearlycommunicate the content development roles and responsibilities for each teammember and manage the fulfillment of those roles throughout the process

  • Track and distributecritical communication and information in a timely fashion to core teams to reduce confusion, redundancies,delays, and additional expense

  • Proactively managechanges in project scope, identify potential crises and risk, and devisecontingency plans in collaboration with the Director of Content Development andVP, Portfolio Management as appropriate

  • Resolve and/or escalate issues that mayimpact process, budget, schedule, or scope in a timely fashion to Director ofContent Development

General Responsibilities

  • Manage masterschedule reporting of digital content programs active in the developmentpipeline

  • Communicateinformation and potential problems as well as creative solutions to Director ofContent Development and VPs of Portfolio Management regularly

  • Provide informationand guidance to cross-functional teams to ensure compliance with changingPearson and HSSL requirements

  • Develop a deepunderstanding of Pearson’s corporate mission, initiatives, and standards andserve as a resource for the HSSL team to keep them current on changes inprocesses, requirements, and standards



Education :

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree, advanced e-learning and/or instructional design education-related coursework preferred

  • Minimum of five or more years of higher education digital content development and design experience with proven success required

  • Management experience preferred

Required Skills :

  • Knowledge of the higher education product line, competitors, instructors, and learners.

  • Experience and proven success in digital content development in the higher education social sciences and business disciplines

  • Proven theoretical and practical knowledge and a deep understanding of how to create efficacious and engaging learner-centered digital content experiences.

  • Ability to understand, adapt, initiate, and implement change required

  • Abilityto take direction, receive feedback, and work within a small, collaborativeteam

  • Evidence of strategic and analytical thinking and planning, team leadership, communication, negotiation, problem-solving, good judgment, and the ability to influence others is required

  • Excellentverbal, written, and listening communication skills as well as the ability tocommunicate difficult/sensitive information effectively

  • Ability to lead and collaborate actively with others on internal and external cross-functional teams and to build consensus and foster collaborative relationships across teams

  • Demonstrate the ability to multi-task, manage multiple projects, prioritize, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment

  • Excellent organizational skills is required

  • Exceptionally strong attention to detail is required

  • Ability to adapt tonew software products for course and/or learning experience delivery andlearning management systems

  • Knowledge ofMicrosoft Office applications, including Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint,Smartsheet, and other content and project management tools
